A YEAR of triumph and tragedy set to culminate in the Billabong XXL Award nominees.

Distilled down to the top five nominees in each of the XXL’s seven divisions, every category is filled with all-time moments, each worthy of being named an XXL champion and earning a share of the $130,000 prize purse.

Sion Milosky is the first surfer to be nominated for an XXL Award posthumously, contributions may be made to the Sion Milosky Family fund at www.volcom.com.

All bonkers nominations can be viewed on the XXL site. For a big wave surfer if you don't win the Tour then this is your world cup. For everyone else it's a chance to watch again some of the highlights of a year where the boundaries of what was thought possible were once again progressed.

Wööörd up for the riders! My opinion: Ride of the Year: Brennan Nr1, "Tasmanian Devil Wave" (Nr 1) Why? Insane wave spot, insane drop with a small kicker wave inside the real wave and he made it all the way! Most Beautiful: David S, Cloudbreak Fiji Best/Biggest Paddle in (most impressive): Danilo C, at Jaws (Nr 2) Biggest in total: Francisco P at Jaws (second from the end), but impressive that Belharra France (last one) isn´t that much smaller!!!)

mark healey's wave was extremely large and incredibly deep..gotta give him that..he even gets tubed from a mooooonster paddle in..there are so many good ones that it's hard to pick but you get the feeling of huge from healey's wave..i did!

Wow! Some real mackers there...Dorian & Healy may have the tallest waves...kinda hard to tell..especially with Healy's fly on the wall barely visible way, way outside. Yeah, Mr. Couto gets the backside balldangler award. But let's not forget Mr. Brennan's totally f*ckin' insane mega ledge launch airborne sacrifice into the hideous pit and save it at Shipstern's Bluff...not so tall, but all balls and skill.

For sure number 2, Danilo Couto, total committment, insane drop, board trying to go vertical, he makes it then saves another potential wipeout when the face rears up a second time. You can tell by his reaction that was the mutts nutts. Total respect for the ballsiest drop I've seen and he makes it. Surely he has got to win.
