ADRIANO de Souza crowns Kelly Slater after beating the champ to the top the podium at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, much to the delight of the locals.

All hail the waves, the creating storm, the sand, and the surfers slipping through flawless hoops from dawn till dusk. Hail the king, stomping on the fingers of another young pretender.

Congratulations must also extend to Adrian de Souza, Rip Curl Pro Portugal winner in a slow final over Kelly. But here in Portugal Slater was the real winner, his final a truncated shadow boxing comp against Owen Wright, whose Rd3 knockout eliminated him from the title race. Adriano bowed down and saluted Kelly on the podium as the 11 times world champion and acclaimed him as his inspiration to get to number one.

“Kelly has been my hero since I ever heard about surfing,” De Souza said. “He is a living legend and to be competing against him at this level is more than a dream come true. He has pushed me more than any other surfer and I owe him a lot."

Barring a very unlikely collision of circumstance 2011 is now Ke11y. Apparently he's into numbers and symmetry so what's to stop 12 titles in 2012? His girlfriend appears to relish life on tour, he's clearly still better than everyone else and what do you do when you stop? Freesurfing doesn't bring you world titles and Kelly is a competitive animal. He's done the tour for long he's bound to be a version of institutionalised and since he discovered Twitter, wow, now he can tell everyone exactly what he thinks all the time. Which is great.

Other news of note in this event was that for the first time they did it in the fabled three days, long days of endless barrels. The perfect event? Pretty close.
Adriano wanted this and the Portuguese crowd loved it.

I bet there is a lot of pressure on Kelly to quit the tour....for all the obvious reasons. Kelly has not only made the tour by creating fame and a higher level of competition among athletes....he has also made it a gentleman's sport. Kelly is a gentleman like no other and guys like Adriano have a lot to learn before Kelly retires his fins. Thus, for all the right reasons I think Kelly should keep on going.....there is no fame in retiring before your job is done.

I don't know Kelly, but I do know guys that know him. I know Taylor K, but haven't spoken to him in some time. Anyway when I talk to guys that know Kelly and when I think about Taylor, now if you me or anybody else was in the shape their in surfing the way they surf 39 40 years old traveling the world getting paid so surf ya ya ya the waves are shitty some times and you would think they would be aful board with Trussles by now, but Paid to surf Chops Super Tubes bla bla bla having fun drinking great wine pounding a few pints with your m8's. Would we me YOU just stop doing it? Be honest, I don't think so boys and girls I just don't think so....

I hate the way everyone kisses Slaters ass so much. Yeah he is an all-time great surfer but I also think a huge amount of hype, corporate backing and help from the judges have helped him get alot of these titles. I'd like to read more about the little guys slogging away at it.... or about why the dream tour doesn't go to hardly any dream surfspots... or why Dane, Bobby etc can't be bothered with it all

The only time I questioned his score was when he beat Medina in rd4 of the quik France a couple weeks ago. Judges are human too and he makes it look so good with his style and flow. It was more a case of Medina being underscored rather than Kelly being overscored, and Medina got his revenge in the quarters, which was cool.

It seems like they could take a couple zeros off the end of the points system. it sounds like a video game score or something. maybe just 100 points for a first place would be nice Kelly Slater just landed a super-mega air for SIX THOUSAND POINTS! must have been the POWERTHIRST!!!

I agree... having these big number scores just makes it seem more complicated than it is

When Kelly get's #11 it's b/c he deserves it...if any of you could surf like him and has put in the training and discipline to get this far then you would want your due. He is the one who has brought this sport out into the forefront and now all these boys get to enjoy the path that his hard work has laid!! He will be 40 in February and what an awesome accomplishment....and inspiration....I hope he runs for President of the United States!!!

So de Souza wins the event but MSW chose to publish an article almost entirely on Slater?

Anyone else notice how Heitor Alves got underscored on every-single-wave?

'First place is 10,000 point which makes catching Kelly Slater in the final two events of the season merely a mathematical possibility.' - Really? What if he breaks a bone, or gets kidnapped, or doesn't bother showing up, or gets struck by lighting? Tip from a Welsh rugby fan - don't count those chickens until the fat lady has sung and is already tucking into the after dinner mints. Having said that, how many 'ke-11-y' shirts do you think quiksilver have on back order in the factory in china

Haha, gets kidnapped. Maybe he'll spontaneously combust, the dudes red hott!

....or if the guy at the ASP in charge of the calculator just uses it to spell 'boobies', rather than adding up the points.

Its pretty awesome to watch Slater win. But a big part of me feels bad for the rest of the guys, so many years of not being able to win...
Tony Chaney216 days ago +23 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
Nah, i can't feel bad for someone who gets paid to surf. Sorry.
