RECENTLY we released our second generation iPhone app and we’d like to announce our first official free Android app. The Android app is a direct copy of the iPhone app and has all the same features. Search for 'MSW Surf Forecast' in the marketplace.

These include:
- 7 Day forecast.
- Live Spot-by-Spot Conditions and Tide Count Down (i.e. 2 hours to low tide).
- Swell, Wind, Period and Pressure charts.
- 7 Day Tide Curves.
- Live Wave Buoy Data.
- Live Wind Station Data.
- Live Eyeball Surf Reports.
- MSW Editorial Features.
- Favourite Spots.
- Photo Gallery.
- Surf Spot/Beach Local Business Directory.

You can only download the official Android app from the marketplace. You’ll need to be running Android 2.0.1 or greater to use the app.

iPhone & Android Feedback
We’ve had lots of response and feedback with regards to the new mobile apps, so thank you to every who has given both positive and negative feedback.

There have been a few teething issues and we plan to update the current app shortly with fixes for these bug. We ask for your patience on this whilst we work out the issues and pass Apple's approval. We’ll be releasing an update to the Android version at the same time.

Speed
Much of the feedback has been around speed and some users have assumed that the new app is downloading more cwe data than the old one. We spent a lot of time making sure the new app was a perfect travel companion and it actually downloads less data when roaming than the old app excepting the improved maps, charts and the features section -- however some of the complexities of delivering this detailed forecast (and trying to make it work on different handsets) have made the app slower, particularly on older phones. We’re working on significant improvements in speed and responsiveness for the next version.

MSW Mobile Pro
Thank you to everyone who has purchased MSW Mobile Pro. Your purchase really helps us to continue improving the app and making sure future versions bring even more benefits to Pro users.

Our records currently show that a small number of people appear to have paid for the ‘Pro’ version but have not managed to successfully log in on the phone. If you think this might be you please do try logging out and then log back in again. If this doesn’t work please email general@magicseaweed.com - ideally with a screen shot of your iTunes or Paypal reciept or your receipt number. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but we really want to make sure you get the benefits of your pro account.

Other Phones and Operating Systems
We hope to support Blackberry (OS 6.0), Windows Mobile 7, WebOS and Symbian 3 in the next version of the app - but do need to test that carefully. Specifications and devices change all the time - so no promises at this stage.

Thank you to all our users for your support, we hope you find it useful!

@gc-msw The link you provided does not work for me. I'm not sure if this is again related to my region but no page loads. Are you able to distribute the .apk file through channels other than the android market. i.e. can you offer a direct download ?

Iphone needs special aps for almost every website because it does not run adobe flash but android browsers include adobe flash 10.1 which makes it SO much better to browse the net. Good example: I watched the Jordy vs Kelly final live on my phone.....iphone users had to buy an app in order to dothe same....nice one Mr Jobs.

Flash is more than just watching videos. It's a whole setup that depends on a desktop environment (for functions such as 'mouse-over'). Many flash sites won't work on your android phone - they won't work on any device without a mouse. Apple want everything to work smooth. That simply isn't possible with a Flash / Touchscreen combination. Flash wasn't designed for Touchscreen. The issue isn't that Apple aren't creating phones for viewing video. The issue is that some websites aren't creating video content for viewing on a touchscreen device (you don't need flash for that - there are other video technologies that don't assume you have a mouse). Eventually these sites will catch up.

Thanks for making an android app - not everyone wants to get sucked into getting a bloody iphone!

why not just view the whole website on your mobile? what advantage does the app have?
soutie572 days ago -6 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
it makes you feel smug

The advantage of the app is its designed to be consumed on a small screen so all the information fit in the small screen nicely, instead of having to scroll around everywhere. Not only this but the main site is designed for a high speed internet connection, something you don't always have by the beach :)

must say it looks pretty cool. i don't have a fancy phone it's a htc bt/windows phone which i have seen for £60 on ebay! no 3g in my area either, it only takes 30 secs to load the whole page, works perfect for me! just confirming to myself that i still don't need a overpriced phone!

Do you still have to pay for the pro version? or is it free?
gc-msw574 days ago +1 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
Pro version is still £1.79, less than a pint and really helps us continue the development of the app.
soutie573 days ago -4 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
a half pint please
