AUSTRALIA is set to maintain its tag as the world’s premier surfing nation, with the federal government pledging $2 million to Surfing Australia for a dedicated training facility at a media conference at Casuarina, NSW.

Already leading the world with their proactive 'forward thinking' approach to surfing, this is another step forward and leaves the rest of the world further behind. Should other surf nations implement the same high performance training plans? We think so.

Diagram of the world's first dedicated surf training facility

As part of its commitment to the sport, Surfing Australia will build the world’s first purpose-built high performance training facility at Casuarina, Northern NSW to support our elite athlete development pathway.

Minister for Sport The Hon Kate Ellis, Member for Richmond The Hon Justine Elliot along with a host of past and present Australian world surfing champions including 7 x ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (Sydney, NSW), 1978 ASP Men’s World Champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew (Coolangatta, Qld) and 2009 ASP Men’s World no.2 Joel Parkinson (Coolangatta, Qld) were present for the day’s announcement.

Mark Occhilupo commented on the facility saying “What an incredible breakthrough for surfing – a dedicated facility to train surfers – in my time I would have loved access to such a facility but it’s just fantastic to see our future surfers will – The rest of the world are trying to be the worlds numer nation in the sport but a facility like this goes a long way in giving us the edge - it’s just fantastic.”

All the surfers present echoed similar views and they included – a recovering Joel Parkinson, Luke Egan, Wayne Bartholomew, Layne Beachley, Harley Ingelby, Chelsea Hedges along with emerging champions Owen Wright and Dean Bowen.

Construction will begin shortly and the facility should be operational early next year ad surfers from all over Australia are certain to utilize this state-of-art modern world first surf training facility.

PS :-) I forgot to say I think it's a great idea and typical of the Ozzy attitude and far better Government than we have. I agree the design leaves a lot to be desired though!! Hope to see it when we're over next in.

Come om guys I thought surfers were open minded and left all those bigoted attitudes to the others? Us you them him her!! First off most of the white people first settlling in oz weren't convicts. 60% of the people who actually made it and settled in Oz were officers and staff. So a lot of 'your' ancestors were not convicts, and could have actually been the people who were sending them over. They were probably also related and very close to a lot of our ancestors so what's the point in picking differences? Us Brits have a history I'm not proud of, the Ozzies have very recent history I'd be apologetic for if I were an Aussie and the very same could be said for the South Africans. Does it really all matter though? Having lived in all three places and many others I can tell you that the people are pretty much the same wherever you go. That shouldn't really be surprising given that we are ALL actually from Africa and all very diostant family members anyway. Get a life and stop picking at differences. It's embarrassing, there people from other countries and races that could be typing all sorts of yip on here about what your/my nation has done to their people, the fact they choose not too is encouraging. When I lived in Mozambique they taught me that if you try and progress forward whilst always looking backwards you'll walk into a lot of obstacles.......forget it and look forward. Aren't you all into the same sport and love of the water anyway? Surely that should be your foundation for convo!! Get off the pc and in the water, 6mm wetsuit or not :-)

Im proud to be from convict blood, thank god my relative was convicted of a pety crime, I could surf everyday because of him. Sport is everything here in Oz and why shouldnt our up and coming pros get the fair share of funding from the government, all the other sports seem to. We all know that surfing is the heathiest of all and the number of surfers here in Oz is rediculous. I say its about time and much more funding should be fourthcoming.

Other countries should learn from the Aus sport business models. They are great, networked and focused on excellence. That is how Aus creates such great talent out of a teeny population. Pity we have ANC who focus on own pockets instead of constructive business models.

did they think about spending 2 million on this epic wave pool instead of a spending it on a building and what else at an expensive beach front???????!!!!!? imagine having this wave pool at your disposal 24/7 see the future of one aspect of surfing here: http://www.surfthering.com/glasswaves.html

i don't see why i should be thrilled by efforts like this, which will benefit 0.001% of actual surfers. who actually wants to see more pro surfers, and surfing going the glossy way of mainstream professional sports?
Ed Magicseaweed658 days ago -2 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
I do. High profiles, more clout, better water quality, waves saved, more careers, better equipment and technology, plus someone has to find a job for all those doing surfing at uni. Soul is in the individual, you cannot attempt to prescribe any more than pretend to regulate.

more crowds (more aggro), more surf camps, more chinese popouts, more trade for the likes of gsi, more b.s. product lines, more "lifestyle" shots, more gibberish talking career surfers, and those guys studying surfing obviously need the reality check they've got coming. not to say that i don't see some of the positive points you're making, but as long as you've got a board and some wax, that's surfing. the rest is just noise.

Not to forget it is paid out of tax money. And the working surfer has less time to surf because of such called "investments".

This is amazing, the aussies although mostly 'convicts' have it spot on. They invest in the people of Australia, what do we invest in?... young mums and people that are too lazy to work! Good one MP's keep robbing from the system!

Just to say I think the Idea of a dedicated surf centre is great- especially considering the popularity of surfing in Australia. However this comes with a serious footnote: they seem to have got the least talented visually illiterate architect (if they even employed an architect) to design this facility. Such a pity given both the fact that this will be looked at as an example of such a facility worldwide and that Australia has such great architects such as Glen Murcutt or Sean Godsell for example.

Congratulations and I think this is fantastic, well a step forward. Just wished the Aust. Gov. injected more funds as 2 million is peanuts considering the future benefits.

I reckon, the way things are going and with the funding the government put into surfing us Brits should have a world champ just about the same time as hell freezing over. Good on the Aussies for backing their future generations and recognising surfing, love to see David Cameron announcing £2 million to develop surfing in the UK; "Um, yes, um, we are proud to develop the future of...hang on a second... surfing, those unwashed oafs bobbing around in the sea. Pah, put that money towards more elite gentleman's clubs in Chelsea". Rant over.
