Independence weekend means a lot to Bajans! It also means a great deal to the contribution the Barbados Surfing Association (B.S.A.) has made for the last 23 years, with the B.S.A’s yearly November Pro, now re-branded as the Independence Surfing Festival slated for the weekend of the 27th-28th of November 2010.
This year’s Independence Surf Festival should be an action packed weekend with great surfing from both local, regional and international surfers converging on the east coast of Barbados’ Soup Bowl. We the BSA are very happy to be able to deliver our biggest and most prestigious event of the year.
With the economy down, hosting this years event has been quite a challenge; however, the Barbados Olympic Association, the Barbados Tourism Authority, TSL Barbados and Diamonds International, Courtesy Garage, and more have really stepped up their efforts to help make this event possible.
The event has great benefits to Barbados with its contribution to sports tourism and indigenous services as well as the direct stimulation to the East Coast of Barbados with hotels, guest houses, mini-marts and restaurants.
It has been a tough year locally for events. The BSA has done all it can to attract sponsors and individuals as well as the private sector businesses to support our events this calendar year. This includes the Barbados Olympic Association, The Barbados Tourism Authority, Diamonds International, TSL Barbados, Banks, Nomis Ltd, Guinness, The Nation Newspaper and The Advocate newspaper with special thanks to Diamonds International.
This year the event boasts two new junior divisions that have been keenly anticipated and sponsored by Diamonds International. The Junior event will complement the existing International Men and Women Pro Divisions.
The festival will also include a half pipe skate ramp for the local skaters to come out and showcase their skills, the Miss Independence Surf Festival Contest, beach volleyball, 2 fully stocked bars and the usual beach culture activities.
Competition will be hot in the men’s pro, the women’s pro event, not to mention the talented and hyperactive juniors have been training extremely hard this year and are ready to showcase their skills in front of the grand audience.
We look forward to the public’s support of this annual event and are open to discussions with new partners to help build this event into the best it can be to benefit Barbados. See you on the beach!
