MANLY BEACH, Australia (Monday, October 13, 2008) – Clean surf in the two-to-three foot (1 metre) range is pushing through at Manly today, and event organizers at the Beachley Classic have called the final day of competition on, with a champion being crowned by day’s end. The Quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 9:15am.

We have clean little waves coming in here this morning and it looks like this is going to be the best we’ll get so we’ll be running the Quarterfinals as soon as possible this morning,” Matt Wilson, Beachley Classic Contest Organizer, said. “We have some really dynamic match-ups ahead and we’re looking forward to an exciting day of competition.”

Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, Oakley Trials winner and wildcard into the Beachley Classic, scored the upset of the season last Saturday, eliminating reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, in Round 3. Wright will now face veteran Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, in Quarterfinal 2.

Gilmore’s shock elimination has allowed Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, to jump into the No. 1 position in ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, a lead she will no doubt be looking to capitalize on when she faces off against stylish natural-footer, Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, in Quarterfinal 3.

Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion, may have announced her retirement last Friday (effective at the end of the season), but is showing no signs of slowing down as she blitzes her home break in hopes of securing a record 8th ASP Women’s World Title. Beachley will meet an in-form Silvana Lima (BRA) 23, in Quarterfinal 4.

When Beachley Classic competition commences, up first will be Julia De La Rosa Toro (PER), 26, battling Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, in Quarterfinal 1.

The Beachley Classic will be webcast LIVE via www.aspworldtour.com and www.swellnet.com.au/beachleyclassic08 beginning at 9:15am.

QF 2: Jacqueline Silva (BRA) vs. Tyler Wright (AUS)
QF 3: Sofia Mulanovich (PER) vs. Rebecca Woods (AUS)
