RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Sunday, September 14, 2008) – Small surf in the one-to-two foot (0.5) metre range and onshore winds have forced event organizers at the Billabong Girls Pro Rio to call another lay day today.

Event No. 4 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Billabong Gils Pro Rio has been running at Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro thus far, but the recent conditions have encouraged event organizers and competitors to scout peaks at the nearby Macumba beach.

We woke to two-foot conditions this morning,” Brooke Farris, ASP Women’s World Tour Manager. “With a swell increase filling in throughout the day, we will be back to reassess conditions tomorrow and are confident of more contestable waves being on offer either at Barra da Tijuca or nearby Macumba.”

When Billabong Girls Pro Rio competition resumes, defending event champion Samantha Cornish (AUS), 27, will be up against Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, in Quarterfinal 1.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 8am.

The Billabong Girls Pro Rio will be webcast LIVE via www.billabongpro.com/rio08
