Gerry has been surfing for over 20 years and has worked as a llifeguard on beaches from north Mayo to Kerry including six summers on Keel beach.He is currently qualified as an Irish Water Safety beach lifeguard and an Irish Surfing Asociation coach.The surf school is approved by and affiliated to the Irish Surfing Association,one of only three such schools in Mayo and the only one on Achill Island.Gerry is usually around to help you with advice and a fair smattering of local knowledge.

Surf Board Hire

Blackfield can help you get into the water and up and surfing with our soft surfboard and wetsuit rental service.We are located about a mile from Keel beach on the main road from Achill Sound, so we are perfectly placed for you to stop off and pick up your gear on your way to the surf .We hire on a daily basis and provide a surfboard and a soft roof rack to put the board on top of your car plus a wetsuit, advice and anything else you might need.Our rates are 15 euro per day for a board and a suit and a rack,and any of our customers will tell you we're pretty good at being flexible to suit you.

Surf School

Lessons can be arranged with Gerry if you want them and Keel beach is the perfect safe place to dip your toes and our board in the water if you're new to the sport and want to get up and give it a bit of welly.A lesson lasts for about two hours and costs 25 Euro. We supply all the equipment, you can even change in our surf shack before we head to the beach.You do need to book lessons in advance so call us on 098 43590

Coffee Bar

When the surf's not so good or you want to take a little downtime, we can provide you with the most considered cup of coffee available locally.We take our coffee seriously, using only the finest Illy medium roast Italian coffee,we consistently check our grind,and the beans for each cup are ground just before brewing.We have a small range of sweet snacks plus 7 flavours of artisan scoop ice cream.From the second week of July until the last week of August we also have soup and toasted sandwiches,smoothies and frappes on the menu.We have a variety of mags and books to read and with seating inside or outside,so if it's a cappucino, espresso, a hot chocolate or a herbal tea, we have just the thing.
