Stormrider Description
This seasonally crowded pier provides easy access to above average waves. Picks up swell from the E, right around to SW and any N in the wind will be offshore.
Keep 250ft (83m) from Bogue Pier and pay to park in summer. Other piers on the island do not allow or tolerate surfing in the vicinity as part of an old and ongoing battle between surfers and fishermen (pier owners). Rules change annually at various breaks, like the Sheraton Hotel Pier, for instance, which is under new ownership and has eliminated public surfing access.

Local Knowledge
One of the better sandbar breaks on Bogue Banks. The island runs east to west orientation and is a south facing beach. Shifting sandbars are common but adjacent to the pier is usually consistent shallow breaking sandbars. Better with incoming tides which can produce peaks on both sides of the pier. Best swells are SW wind swells and SE swells produced by tropical systems. Any wind with a northerly direction is offshore. Ideal conditions are SW or SE swells with light northerly winds. Summer swells are typically SW wind chop. Fall and spring produce more of the SE swells with glassy conditions (when the blues are running). Winter time produces usually bigger southerly swells and hard offshore winds - fog. Anyone can usually find something to ride at BIP 300 days of the year.

This graph shows the percentage of days that had a ridable wind swell (7 seconds period or more) or groundswell (10 seconds period or more) of over 3ft. It also shows the dominant wind direction. Not all of these days will neccessarily give great surf, and very short lived wind swells or longer period secondary swells may produce surf not recorded, but it gives a clear idea of the seasonal trend and a rough guide to the chances of scoring something ridable.
