Stormrider Description
Fun, beachbreak peaks with sandbars anchored by the pier. East side is the most popular spot on the Channel coast, with lefts heading back into the pier and faster rights leading down the beach. More peaks on the west side without the SW wind protection. Paddling channel next to pier. On a solid SW groundswell (or SE windswell) and N wind there are barrels for the taking.
Always crowded with locals, students, beginners, etc. Year-round pay car park by the beach, hard to get a spot in the summer.

Consists of two main breaks at both Bournemouth and Boscombe pier. Boscombe is the home of Europe's first artificial reef (cover that a bit later). Bournemouth Pier: Super crowded at any size as its so easily accessible and predictable. Mostly surfed on SW wind storms, the large pier can provide good shelter up to relatively high winds. The pier also beautifully shapes the sand banks either side of it to provide a short left and long right on the east side and a long left (with sections) on the west side. Can produce the odd barrel when the tides right and the pervious storms have washed enough sand up on the bank. Boscombe Pier: Apparently less crowded than Bournemouth pier, but not really. Recently destroyed by the Council (cough) by dumping lots of sand on the beach to extend it, which essentially destroyed its banks. The council also shortened the pier which means its more exposed to strong winds. Banks are starting to come back now (2009), but will probably never be the same. Both sides of the pier now offer short fast rides. The Reef: Located at Boscombe pier, finished in 09, but has never stood up to expectations. There are various theories as to why this is, I am not going to go into it. If you are a bodyboarder it's worth checking as can sometimes offer a short fast barrel. There are various peaks along the entire stretch of coast Sandbanks to the headland, use your experience to predict what banks/peaks are going to be working on what swell/wind combo.

This graph shows the percentage of days that had a ridable wind swell (7 seconds period or more) or groundswell (10 seconds period or more) of over 3ft. It also shows the dominant wind direction. Not all of these days will neccessarily give great surf, and very short lived wind swells or longer period secondary swells may produce surf not recorded, but it gives a clear idea of the seasonal trend and a rough guide to the chances of scoring something ridable.
