Kerby and Cortney ventured out into huge, windy and dangerous conditions to try and surf a crazy off shore slab on the bottom coast of Australia. Cortney gets swallowed up by a 20ft monster and not long after Kerby sucks his leash into the intake of the ski, leaving them stranded at sea in huge swells. The guys had to be rescued and spent the rest of the day getting towed through the rough and treacherous conditions to safety. I’ll go ahead and say it: The slab wins this day. Shit, I got scared just watching from California! There’s something wrong with that wave, like it was sent from hell or something… no thanks.
Being from Hawaii I can see why they used jet ski support. paddling (although possible)into that zone would be a huge risk due to the proximity of rocks, and rogue sets. All the haters of this vid, it doesnt look like paddling in would be a viable option, except for the 2nd day (notice the bodyboarder)... Just relax guys. Every island or continent has slabs but Ozzies do charge very hard. They see Hawaii as not super gnarly even though its deadly (RIP Malik, Mozo, Chesser, and the countless other underground guys that have died surfing in Hawaii)
It's actually the second day that we are talking about, easily paddle-able, on a reef that ledges like that (i doubt there would be too many sneaker sets)! I have the utmost respect for the Hawaiian guys/waves, i agree, people think because they are not warping or boiling there not dangerous. It's partly the reason i would never go to hawaii, it would be a waist of a trip for me as i know i cannot handle thats sort of size/power mix. They are the kind of waves that give me nightmares. I would be so much more comfortable on a draining dry reef at the same size, not sure why, just what i like and am used to i guess. but i'll say it again, if they can paddle, paddle! If the set up is too "scary" , they should go somewhere else! If they are towing to get the upper hand on the paddlers , fuck off and die!
ps. i'm not a charger in any sense of the word, 8-10 is my max, i just don't want this trend of towing these kind of days to catch on. It's an added hassle to those who are paddling!
blah blah da s@@@e stops when its big because every one goes into the woodwork which is great no wannabees jus lads who do their thing as posted earlier jus me and another guy out 2 people !!!!!!!!!! now im not saying im great or better im not but come on
is it me but i was at brandon bay dumps tuesday 20 oct 09 it was double overhead, bigger on some sets no jet skis paddle power baby and no lame ass video what a waste this going to be happening a lot more now towins on 6ft waves watch this space
some randomers towing cribber on a day that they could have paddled, whats your point? It's not some weird competition! clearly oz gets better waves than us!
Listen to you pommy "surfers" write these boys off, hahaha, what a joke you all are. Clueless, abilityless kooks. Keep flappin around newquay on ya bics lads, you'd get ya ring holes fed to ya if you ever happend to paddle out in some real waves.
Bumbloids, Aileens, Cribber, THAT east coast reef (shhhh), Laurens, smackies, Y-Boc, Brimms..could go on forever....Not comparing these to "The Right", but i would call all of these pretty serious if you ask me (and probably the rest of the world)!
As for writing these guys off, give me Malik Joyeux (rip),Manoa Drollet, Mitch Rawlins, Laird, Garret, Brendon Newton, Jeff Clark...blah blah blah, the list goes on and on....
Na we don't have decent surf in the UK.....

Sorry it is you that has to go back to school, Northern Ireland only. Aileens is in the Republic of Ireland which is not in the UK. I must admit when talking about "our" coastlines (above) i was generalising somewhat as it may as well be the same coast. But as we are talking now about land ownership, i stand corrected. Over and out.
surfer dude by the way im sure your not and their is nothing wrong with English breaks in fact Porthleven is voted the best break in Europe alot! So stick to which ever 3rd world country your from we got better waves than you
"Shit it's big, were going to have to go in, well...if we just take a couple of waves each session and then we can make up some sort of excuse why we had to bail...hmm..got a spare leash?"....towing should be banned from normal lineups with free paddlers!
Hey guys, just thought I'd mention a few things as I'm good friends with the Brown Brothers ... firstly these guys have been surfing crazy slabs for years, this trip wasn't one of the better ones although Cotney's wave was pretty nuts! But they know the slab won hands down that day. This is one of their favourite waves & Kerby got a crazy one out there last year http://www.surfersvillage.com/gal/pic.asp?iCat=73&iPic=3887 Pretty annoying re the legrope (no that wasn’t an excuse not to surf) and yeh the camera angle was crap but you can’t shoot a wave in 20ft seas & 20 knots onshore unless you’ve got a helicopter ... those guys are pro cinematographers and that was the best shot they could get in those conditions. Kerby Brown hasn't had a major sponsor for some time and so they're out there trying to do their best, documenting surf trips and get the website running without any support. These guys charge places like Shippies, Hawaii etc .. they've been surfing there for years it's just when you don't have the money to get there it makes surfing those waves pretty god dam hard. And by the way they're really good mates with Mitch Rawlings and were great mates with Malik may he rest in peace. If that clip wasn't to your standards check out this one of the Brown Brothers, mates Ry Craike & Dino Adrian, Andy Irons, Luke Egan and Occy surfing WA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkHtlSLBNYw
Hey ***Surfer***, thanks for you response, a very reasonable one at that! To be honest, all my comments above this one are just a simple retaliation against 101. This comment in particular is just me pissing around and i'm sorry if i caused any offense. I just have a preference to the guys i have already mentioned above. The malice in my tone was simply aimed at (a)101 for writing off the UK (b) The idiots that live in my area (below). My original and ONLY beef is the fact that they are towing a 6 foot wave when clearly it could be paddled. It's becoming such a regular occurrence these days when it gets above 6 foot (in this case actually 6 foot) soon every decent sized lineup will be polluted with the sound of whirring motors. It is not only noisey, it disrupts the lineup etiquette, it's dangerous for those who are actually paddling and in my personal opinion takes a lot of the sport out of it (like a skateboard with an engine or free diving with a breather. Just leave that sort of thing for the heavy stuff (like the first session in this vid). Sorry for the rant and sorry if i offended you or anyone else with my comments...cheers
prob one of the lamest "tow-in, big wave slab" videos to come out for a while. poor camera angles and very little action. good luck getting your brownbrothers website going with material like that.
exactly.. notice the bodyboarder merrily paddling over the first one.
these guys are shit, fancy sucking your leash into the ski.... kooks
probably see them towing into boscombe reef soon
Correct me if i am wrong but i thought that when towning in you should ditch the leash so if you have to be rescued by the ski it does not cause drag. Wasn't it also because there is a slim possibility that things like leashes could get pulled into the ski intake???? Oh, i am a silly sod! That just happened.
Shooter Mcgavin: I know you were just saying that about the boscombe reef in jest, but i bet you any money there will be some rich kid dildo that will try it! I can picture it now, biggest cleanest day of the year, 20 people sitting patiently on the peak and all of a sudden some nonce gets slung shot straight into a set, bypassing the que. LOL, that would cause an uproar!
