COME rain or shine, this summer (Aug-Sept 2009) will be awash with epic surf, courtesy of The Surf Screen bringing an inspiring line up of the very best independent surf movie content, including:
Searching for Michael Peterson by Jolyon Hoff. (Across the UK This August with the director) A documentary telling the moving story of one of Australia’s greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness.
For five glorious years “MP” led the Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested, including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant, aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert Falzon’s Morning of the Earth in 1972, and MP never looked back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to tragedy and Michael’s demons claimed him.
In 1983 he was locked up after a 15-car police chase across Queensland and iagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He never surfed again.

Violin virtuoso and surfer Richard Tognetti, of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, with his friend, surfing provocateur Derek Hynd, asked a diverse group of surfers, including former world champion Tom Carroll and master shaper Tom Wegener, to join them on remote King Island at the edge of the Southern Ocean, to surf... without fins.
In the past six months Musica Surfica has won Best Picture at the New York Surf Film Festival and the Adventure Award ("for the best-told adventures in, on, or around the Sea") at the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival.
