NEWQUAY, Sept 4th and 5th. An intro to oceanography and meteorology for surfers and other water users by Dr Tony Butt.
Tolcarne Beach in Newquay will be the scene of one of the South Wests's largest surfing competitions as over 100 local school pupils take to the waves to battle against each other for the title of Cornish School Surf Champion. This year the schools contest is being held in conjunction with the Animal Surf Academy who will be keeping an eye out for hot new talent and providing prizes for the competitors.

The Animal Surf Academy Cornish Schools event, uniquely organised and run by students of the Surf Academy@Treviglas, is set to be held in big surf conditions according to the surf forecast – meaning the latest up and coming Cornish surf talent will be able to show off their skills in the surf whilst battling it out amongst the waves.

Tretherras School in Newquay will be defending their championship title against their biggest rivals Treviglas Community College and St Ives School, who are amongst the fourteen schools taking part. Local up and coming surf talent including Seb Smart from Cape Cornwall, an early favourite for the U16 title, and Tretherras' Jack Hughes will be fighting for pole position. Sponsored surf girl Kathleen Spears, who is currently studying the Surf Studies A Level at Treviglas, will also be on-site helping to organise the competition with her peers.

Katie O’Neill, Animal marketing coordinator said, ‘The Animal Surf Academy has been set up as proof of Animal’s commitment to UK surfing. Getting behind events like the Cornish Schools Surf Championships is a great way of making sure we can spot up the future UK surf stars on our doorstep, as well as encouraging youngsters to get active and make the most of the local coast line.’

Ellis Attwell, Surf Academy@Treviglas director said, ‘the Cornish Schools is unique in bringing together surfers of all standards from across the county, with the ethos on accessibility and fun for all - whilst ensuring that top level, serious surfing in our schools can still be celebrated. I would like to say a massive thank you to the BSA, Animal, Overhead Surf Shop and Ginsters for their commitment to grassroots level surfing in this country. Without their help this event would not be possible.’

Gemma Wilson of Cornwall’s School Sport Partnership, who are also behind the event said, ‘Four surf competitions have fed into the event this year – the surfers have battled is out t be seeded at the event. Schools Sport Co-ordinators and Competition Managers within our secondary schools have done a fantastic job of arranging events in preparation for this weekend. Surfing is starting to become a competitive element to the school sport that happens in the Cornwall area.’

The Treviglas Surf Academy is unique in being the only surfing based post-16 course in the country. Organising The Cornish Schools Surfing Championships, undertaking 'A' levels in Sport and Tourism, completing University modules and gaining practical qualifications such as lifeguard and BSA surf coaching awards are all achieved by the students.
