Also knocked out in this round of 64 were last year’s semi-finalist,Jarrad Howse, and South African star Casey Grant. But not all the surprises were negative. Among the most positive was the heat win of 14 year old local surfer Benji Brand, who with a 16.34 heat score, achieved the highest of the day.
“I’m really stoked. I surf here a lot at Outer Kom. It’s a really fun wave,” said Benji Brand. “There was quite a bit of kelp today but I managed to get 2 good scores. I’ve been surfing 9 years. I’ve lived in Hawaii as well as just on the point here, which I think helped.”
Davey Brand one of the youngest competitors, but age is no bar to throwing it down.
when any kind of swell hits cape town, you can guarantee it will be double overhead somewhere on our blessed peninsula, I have surfed the Kom, its not a cushy wave by any means, I have been on the west coast in the UK for quite a whilst now, and I am still waiting for the day it will get that size.
.... yeah, heard of em. And with each pic of a guy in the contest riding waves? I can't imagine they'd let the sets pass and ride the 'lull's' They'd wait and snag the biggest in their heat... what we are seeing above. Like I said, fun size - not massive!
Yea, I guess England gets way bigger all the time...
Thats big. I will agree and say that it isn't massive, but it is big. Fun size? that spot looks creepy.
