The left points around Pichilemu dominate this stretch of surf-soaked Chile and were it not for the remote nature of the country it would be packed with surfers. Immense swells roll up from the Roaring 40s all year, only dropping off in high summer. Consistent southerly winds, predominantly (south-easterly) offshore in the mornings are the product of the cool Humboldt current and dominate the whole of this western coast of South America. Winds only swing to the north during the winter months of May to July. Water temperature varies between 13-16ºC or 55-61ºF. Credited as being the pioneer of surfing in Chile, marine biologist, Sergio Santa Cruz first took to the water in 1969 in search of marine life as well as waves.
