ALAN Wilson's Dagdraumer, featuring Jack Johns, a visual ode to an under-the-radar passion.
Passion is the driving force for anyone who dedicates their life to the world of action sports. Sometimes that passion can bring the rewards of worldwide acclaim, titles and money. This, however, isn’t everyone’s story; a lot of people follow their passion without any hint of a reward other than the reward of doing what they love. This is the story that, filmmaker, Allan Wilson wants to tell in Dagdraumer.
The sixth entry in the Relentless Energy Drink Short Stories Competition, the film Stars bodyboarder Jack Johns and is a stunning visual poem about those who put everything into what they love, working long stints in the city to be able to fund jaunts to the sea and focus on their boarding.
In his own words, Allan wanted to create "a surreal, dreamlike glimpse into life as a bodyboarder, a more than often overlooked element of the surfing world." Dagdraumer (an Icelandic word for day dreaming) is a wordless journey into the salt as Allan’s distinctive camera style captures both the cold bleakness of the city, and the panoramic beauty of the sea.
For Gods sake will everyone be careful when making derogatory comments about bodyboarders! As the ratings of the light hearted comments below suggest, they all have severe inferiority complexes.
I know the feeling. It's such a refreshing change of perspective while working with my PC and waiting for the next swell. How about that last barrel? What a fu*kin' massive blowout!
Totally inspiring...fkn' awesome riding and photography. It's always refreshing to see young bucks following their passions. Good job boys...keep it up. Upon seeing the nature scenes, I felt a nostalgic urge to take a hike and go plant something. (Did I just write that?) Nah...just a nostalgic thought.
I was hoping to see more of the cold bleakness of the city...y'know...for contrast purposes...but that's just me. This WAS well done. I don't have the 'passion' to put myself in harm's way for that familiar adrenaline rush we all seek...Not like some obviously do in this latest sponger video...But I do really enjoy watching THEM...no matter what they're riding. It takes well-honed skills and judgement to make some of the aerial clips look so fun and easy. By the sponger AND the cameraman. The bigger stuff was gut-wrenching.
Correction: I still like some risk of harm. That's where the fun is. I'd say clean 10 ft. barrels is probably MY upper limit. But...when you've had a thick lip drive you...standing up...THROUGH your board...or have been pitched over the falls backwards and then landed on a solid, thick old longboard rail...with your lower back/kidney area(the groin might have been even worse, shudder)...you def. wouldn't want it to happen on anything bigger. Anyone who rides anything on waves over 15 ft well...SUPs, kayakers, inflatable dragon riders....even spongers...has my unqualified* respect. That is serious harm territory, even with no hard, fiberglass objects nearby. Rock slabs, reefs, sand...and even water itself...can be VERY hard above 10 feet.
*unqualified of course precludes moped riders(walk...damn you!)and/or those who bring Rubik's cubes with them into the lineup. I don't fixate on 'fashion'...like some.
Nice vid. Good mixture of mental barrels and crazy airs. Good editing too, love the way the music builds momentum. However: that closing shot on the jetty was getting dangerously close to James Blunt ‘Your’re Beautiful’ territory. Was half expecting Jack to de-robe, arrange his shoes in a neat row and then jump off the edge.
P.S. You seem to get away with it but I cant say I’m a fan of the skinny jeans thing, if you wanted the skin-tight look isn’t it easier just keep your wetsuit on?
Hook, line and sinker, pleasure doing business with ya. But nice burn man. I’ve just been schooled on style by a bodyboarder…..all time low.
And “Focus on the surf and nature” I assume that advice was for the cameraman, I counted over 40 shots of him walking about with a board before the first wave is even ridden.
Dude, i miss Mentoza, nobody understands sarcasm anymore... "Bunch of spongers" was supposed to be a compliment regarding the skills those guys have in the vid. F**k the ASP anyway
