WORD is that travel has replaced religious pilgrimage in our lives -- some worship the all inclusive sun lounger, others cultural city trips, some booze hags crave neon and vomit. Whereas us, we generally like waves generated by deep low pressure systems.
These waves can include a hint of neon and vomit, sometimes culture and often sun, but above all they rely upon winter storms. Sure you get storms in summer but it's winter's violence which regularly produces for all of us. Even a perfect day in the Mentawai is reliant upon a deep low spinning down in the Southern Hemisphere's belly.
We're intrinsically bound to winter weather systems and somewhere it is always winter. Here's the first edition of our favourite season's story from around the world. First up, two faces of Australia's peak swell season: Eastern promise from Alex at Bluesnapper vs Western seclusion via Greg Burke.
I genuinely don't even know what's going to happen to this guy (picture 1 with text shrunk!!!); A) dive and go for the through the back = over the falls and nice back breaker B) Dive for the bottom = rapidly draining reef with the lip ready to unleash and break you or your board
