The Surf School

The Escape Surf School is based in the centre of Newquay, on the premises of Belushis, Newquays premier surf bar and hostel. We have sensational views at our base over Newquays finest surfing beaches.

We are a British Surfing Association (BSA) level 4 surf school, which is the highest level achievable for a UK surf school. This means we are qualified to teach complete beginnners to advanced and contest surfers.

We are one of the only surf schools is Newquay that can boast a professional surfer as Head Coach - Mike Young , who has been surfing professionally for over 25 years, competeing for many years on the WQS tour.
Mike is also Head Coach for the British Junior Surf Team

We teach on either Towan / Great Western or Fistral Beach, depending upon the tides and conditions of the day. We are centrally located, with each beach less than a 5 minute walk away - check out the enquiries page for a map.

As well as offering beginner and intermeadite lessons through the Surf school, we also offer advanced coaching thorugh the Escape Elite Surf Academy

The Surf Academy

The Escape Surf Academy is aimed at Intermediate and Advanced surfers, both recreational and Contest surfers, looking to improve their surfing technique. We offer a variety of courses from intensive 1/2 day sessions, through to week-long courses.

The courses cover a variety of activities designed to improve surfing technique, speed and manoeuvrability, stance, flow, fitness & mental state and give an opportunity for surfers to understand their surfing strengths and weaknesses.

Each session will be tailored to the clients’ current level & skill and will aim to improve competence, confidence, technique and fitness. Video analysis sessions will be used to allow the client to understand and visualise their surfing technique, and concentrate on weaker areas.

The programme aimed at professional & contest surfers will also include intensive contest strategy workshops, to improve performance and results.

We have a large selection of boards, provided by Newquay surf shops, Surfers Paradise & the Longboard House, to give surfers an opportunity to try different equipment suited to their level and the surf conditions.

All the Academy lessons are taught by Head Coach Mike Young and are run as small groups - 1-4 people max
Mike has surfed professionally for 25 years, and still competes in national and international contests. His passion for teaching and sharing his surfing knowledge & skills make him an excellent coach and mentor. His professional achievements include:

Recreational Surfer Courses

Both of these courses are aimed at the recreational surfer looking to improve any area of their surfing. Mikes in-depth knowledge will improve your paddling, style, stance, speed, and manoeuvrability and give you the competence to progress much faster than struggling on your own. Mike will also ensure you are using the correct equipment
Group sizes will be kept below 5 to ensure maximum coaching time

2 day course - £120 - includes:

Contest Surfer Courses

These courses cover a variety of activities designed to improve surfing technique, speed & manoeuvrability, contest strategy, stance, flow, fitness & mental state and give an opportunity for surfers to understand their surfing strengths and weaknesses. We use intensive contest scenarios to recreate the competitive environment, aiming to improve performance and results. These training activities combine to give the surfer the edge against their competitors on the day of the contest.

Video analysis sessions will be used to allow the client to understand and visualise their surfing technique, and concentrate on areas of weakness.

“One on One” session – 3 hrs - £80 per person

This course is aimed at surfers looking for an intensive coaching session, perhaps before an event or to highlight and improve upon weaker areas. You will receive 3 hours of intensive One on One coaching where the focus is solely on yourself and improving your surfing and results
This course will be tailored as required but could cover the following: Equipment, Technique, Stance, Fitness, Contest preparation, including conditions, mental prep, and strategy.

“ Intensive Pre Contest Course” – 2 Full Days – £270 per person

This course is an intensive 2-day course, aimed at surfers looking to bring their surfing level up to scratch and to allow mental and physical preparation before a contest. We concentrate on contest strategy & format, strengths & weaknesses and mental preparation. Video recording and analysis is used, to give the surfers an insight into their technique.
This course aims to bring focus and knowledge to the surfer prior to the day of the contest, giving them the all-important edge and skill to perform on the day.

“All Rounder” Training Course - 5 half days - £340 per person

This course is aimed at surfers looking for an all round training programme between contests, to give a complete brush up on all areas of their surfing, from technique and manoeuvres, to fitness, mental preparation and contest strategy. We will use a variety of training techniques, including contest format, fitness training and video & photo analysis.

This course aims to provide a solid training base for contest surfers, to sharpen their weaker areas and build upon their strengths, and give the surfer the extra knowledge and confidence to perform.

Surf School Courses

We offer a variety of courses from 1/2 day to 6 days courses, as well as Surf and Accommodation packages
Here are just a few of our courses :

1 Half Day - £25 (2 1/2 hour taster session)
Perfect for beginners looking for an introduction to surfing.
For students on a first lesson we will introduce all of the skills and techniques necessary to surf with control and safety. You'll be riding the waves with style!
If you have already surfed, then we will use this session to build on more advanced techniques

Full Day - £45 (5 hours tuition - over 2 half day sessions)
An intensive day of surfing aimed at people wanting to learn lots of techniques in a short period of time. The lessons will be tailored to your individual level of surfing guaranteeing your get the most out of the session. The 2 sessions can be taken over 1 or 2 days as required.

3 Half Days - £60 (3 x 2.5 hr sessions)
A great way to cover the basics of surfing in a short period of time. The lessons will be tailored to your individual level of surfing The 3 sessions can be taken over 3 seperate days if required

2 Full Days - £75 (4 x 2.5 hr sessions)
A course designed for an individual or group. You will be shown the basics of surfing through to more progressive techniques, including turning and outback surfing, as well as paddling and wave awareness

6 Day Course £105(6 x 2.5hr sessions)
A great course based over one week. Come and surf with us and live the lifestyle with instructors Will and Mike. Suitable for all abilities. You will be shown basic techniques through to advanced techniques. Lots of water time so a great opportunity to become a competent surfer.

- We use new innovative teaching methods which guarantee after your first lesson you will be standing and surfing to the beach.

- The Escape Surf School is a British Surfing Association Level 4 Surf School. We are qualified to teach total beginners to upper level professional surfers. Whatever your level we can progress you to the next level.

Location and facilities

We are based in Newquay, Cornwall on the premises of St Christophers Inn / Belushis, and can offer accommodation packages if required (please contact us for more information). Because of our location we can utilise a variety of breaks depending upon surfers level and the current conditions. We boast the following facilities on site:
