FCS JS-1 Performance Core fin review

A FIN designed by Jason Stevenson, or JS as many who ride his boards know him, promises quality. Recognised as one of the world's top shapers with Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith and Bruce Irons riding his boards and using these fins. The JS-1 uses Performance Core technology with Inside Foil Technology, a mouth full to say, plus it has full surfing royalty endorsement - but will it make a difference to our Test Team's surfing?

Connor's experience backs up the marketing blurb which claims the fin is designed to release quickly:

On the wave I could easily feel the difference having lighter fins. Flying through the water the back end felt a lot looser. I put these fins on a mini-mal, and even on that, I was able to whip the back end round a fair bit.

However Tom Browning found the opposite was true, most likely due to the increased surface area, in comparison to his G3000s:

I surfed them in some solid 4ft waves and they felt great – I definitely felt I had more drive down the line with these than the G3000s I had been using previously. They felt stiffer through turns due to the larger area, but in the waves I was surfing that was great – I didn't want to be sliding out, I wanted to be driving fast down the line making sections and shaping some drawn out turns, aided by the added rake surface area. Probably more of a mental thing than anything else but my board also felt a bit lighter and more responsive than usual.
Tom Browning

So what is the conclusion? They felt good, responsive and positive. But if you are looking to perform like Jordy Smith only go for them if you are already on a mid-sized fin system. In this instance size is everything.
