A FIN'S just a fin right? Well not according to the surf media, FCS and their team of pros. Here we are testing PC Series fins which range in size, starting with the PC-3 at the lowest end of the scale, moving up in size to the PC-5s and then the PC-7s. By size we are referring to surface area of the fin and thus the volume of water it displaces as you turn.
FCS' PC or Performance Core series of fins are designed to deliver the stiffness of a traditional glass fin whilst gaining a performance boost from the reduced weight. They also have an inside foil which will increase the rate of water flow across the two faces of the fin. Previous incarnations have used one foiled and one flat side, resulting in an uneven water flow.
These fine tunings to the materials and hydrodynamics of fins seem convincing and impressive on paper, but does it transfer from paper to practice as promised? Like the most of us I am certainly no aspiring pro-surfer, so with a fin labelled as 'another favourite with the pros', I wondered how I would find them. Jethro Lynch
However, the question is would your average surfer be able to feel the difference in surface area between their standard fins and these performance models?
I wasn’t expecting much else from the PC-7 fin set which when put against the PC-5s only have a slightly larger template area. The reality however was that they stiffened my board up considerably, so much so that on the first few waves I couldn’t work out what I was doing wrong! Patrick Cummins
Typically you would expect people to go up in fins size dependent upon three factors: an individual's weight, the size and power of the waves and their surfing style. The less surface area a fin possess, the looser it should become.
Predictable flex giving a 'no-surprises' ride. If your time in the water is precious then these solid, reliable, user-friendly fins are sure to fit the bill. On top of that they look fantastic... there were no big surprises - no wishy-washy feeling at the tail, just a good predictable ride. Better than my old fins? I think so. More drive? Well, on one fast section where I had to work to stay ahead it did seem more direct and maybe a bit quicker. But... I can't say for sure. Laurie Saunders
A fin is not just a fin, but whether for the Average Joe surfer it provides exactly what it says in the tin can be a difficult, yet honest, thing to state. Are they better than the heavy stock fins that came with you board? The answer to that is probably yes. Also, they look fantastic, the larger you go the more they stiffen up the board and in-use they provide a snappy and predicable release. They will improve the way your board responds, whether you are good enough notice it or not. So if you fancy a change - go get some.
