[PT- Laurie Saunders' PC-5 Review]
Laurie Saunders
Surfing tenish years. My favourite board is a 7'8" performance mini-mal -Ideal for most days here on the South Coast. My ability level is probably average and I reckon my surfing verges towards the smooth side of things although I'm not averse to bouncing occasionally to milk the most out of a wave. I love going on van trips with my wife, Elaine: France, Northern Spain, Portugal, Wales and, of course, the West Country. For these missions I break out my 6'8" thruster!

The finish and appearance of the PC-5s is first rate. Supplied in a fin pouch with a key they have a quality, handmade feel which is far removed from the mass-produced, injection moulded 'stock' fins supplied with most 'off-the shelf' boards.

The PC-5 fins are only a few millimetres smaller, all-round, than the PC-7s I tested before and in use this is an almost indiscernible difference. They still felt 'locked-in' and 'drivey', especially in the gutless surf I was blessed with during this test period. In my opinion the PC-5s felt quite stiff but still had enough predictable flex to help bring a board to life and really give you something to dig in and lean on.

They certainly didn't feel 'dull' and lifeless like some cheaper, moulded, fins can and I would suggest they would be the ideal fin for a rider whose surfing is improving and who wants to progress on from standard plastic fins. Once again an excellent, high quality, set of fins from FCS. Predictable flex giving a 'no-surprises' ride. If your time in the water is precious then these solid, reliable, user-friendly fins are sure to fit the bill. On top of that they look fantastic.
My Rating: ****1/2
