Spot check ... Still the Graveyard of the Atlantic or a promised land of empty barrels?© 2009 - Kenny Onufrock/Transworldsurf

The outer islands of North Carolina’s coast descend south from the Virginia border to Cedar Island. Isolated and vulnerable, the slender, skeletal string of islands juts into the Atlantic at Cape Hatteras, where the powerful, cold waters of the Labrador Current and the warm trough of the Gulf Stream converge.

Known previously as “The Graveyard of the Atlantic” a moniker earned from pirates — most reputably Blackbeard — who used the shallow sandbars and intricate inlets to prey on unsuspecting vessels. Many seasons and storms have passed since Blackbeard fought his last battle at Ocracoke Inlet, but the Outer Banks’ history still stirs through the sea oats in the salty breeze.

oh yeah, Jeff Myers is the biggest kook around, if it gets over 6 feet, he goes to VB were he can handle the milder conditions.

thank you for letting the rest of the world know about the few waves we have, we had somethin special, now just a kook trap, 100+ people on one peak, for the record the waves are only really good once or twice a year, so don't get your hopes up.

FWI, watch out for the damn horse flies. They get you even in the water, and don't let one in you car! Also, carry extra water if you're crossing any of the long bridges after dark for windshield washer fluid.

Absolutely loved NC, I spent 13 months in E-city going to Aviation Electronics school at the CG base. I surfed every friggin day after school. Thank god gas was cheap back then. I got my first stitches at a beach break just up from Boilers. Best people around in those parts.

I'd say the article is about right...but sometimes those winter Nor'easters pump out bigger swell than some hurricanes for the north beaches.
