Beautiful Girls headline with new album offering...
Courtesy of two albums and a huge live presence, The Beautiful Girls have developed a reputation as stoner-friendly surfers who peddle crowd-pleasing, rootsy jam tunes. Now, it looks as though that’s a rep they’re keen to abandon. Their third album, Ziggurats, sees a rethink in songwriter and band leader Mat McHugh’s approach to making music, as he eschews the loose approach he’s previously taken in the studio and focuses on the clever, well-formed songs built on subtle layers and well-structured dimensions. The result is a great leap forward, shedding B-grade reggae flavors and replacing them with The Police, The Clash or Paul Kelly in some places and a genuine unique laid-back vibe that’s all their own in others ***** Rolling Stone
