Named after the old Haggerty estate, classic and thick wintertime lefts off the rocky headland officially called Malaga Cove. Site of some of California’s earliest surfing days. Three separate take-off zones here: Furthest inside is Lower Hags, a slower left working best on W swell. Haggertys, the main peak at the base of the church parking lot, starts breaking at 4ft (1.2m). Lots of shallow rocks near the take-off; expect blatant drop-ins. Best with NW swell. South of the church, Upper Hags has very long walls. Starts working at 6ft (2m); a mistake here will mean a trip over the reef. Best on big W swell. Paddle up from Haggertys.
Always plenty of takers at these high-consistency spots.
Access is via a trail in the 500 block of Paseo del Mar at Via Chino, leading to the southern end of Malaga Cove.
