I live in the South West, and build these boards just outside Plymouth, near Mothecombe beach. I have made & surfed foam core boards, but decided to try making Hollow Wooden Surfboards, after coming across some on the internet. I was sold on the classic look of the boards, as well as the environmental benefits that come with Hollow Wooden boards. They are very labour intensive as opposed to foam core boards, but this is due to each one being a totally unique, original board and I feel the outcome is worth far more than the work involved.

The Boards

The boards are generally made with Balsa strips for the top & bottom decks, laid over a marine ply ‘fishbone’ frame. The rails are usually a combination of balsa & hardwood contrast, however the beauty & individuality of the boards leaves you to decide on the different types of wood used, based on your own creativity. The variations are limitless.

I've been considering making my own wood boards myself. But I have noticed most of the boards on the internet are either longboards, fishes, or really old outdated shapes. I'm thinking of making a nice 6'5, with lots of rocker, round tail, and a general performance shape. A kind of bigger wave all round board. Something that will work on anything from 3ft to 8ft. I am quite big, 6'3", and weigh 85kg, and still climbing. I'm really strong and train every day. I am not interested in tail slides or airs, but I'd like to carve and hack waves, as well as get some really hollow tubes. I don't mind a board that is three or even four times heavier than a foam board of the same shape. I in fact already prefer a quite heavy board, and I always ask for an extra thick glass job. I will also not use balsa for the board, but a form of cedar. I feel strength is the main thing. The waves I surf are powerful enough for the board to run nicely. I in general want a board with power, speed, durability, with a performance shape, but with the advantage of it being heavy, which will give it lots of momentum, and will really force me to put everything I've got into a turn. I believe that will make for more powerful, faster, more stylish surfing. Power and speed through thick sections is my main priority.

Hi Tony_B, Thanks for the kind words. I have certainly considered building with Bamboo. I have seen boards made from Bamboo, and they look awesome! The only probs I have found, is sourcing the wood. Trying to keep costs down etc. Excellent suggestion, thanks
