[PT-First stop Telo]

A heavy Telo right ... The Dive© 2009 - Sunshine Surf Safari/ Green Room

Situated just above the Equator, sandwiched by Nias and the Mentawai, the Telo Islands are a secret held in plain sight. Not a real secret, it's just that they're not renowned for epic waves and live shaded by the shadow of their more flashy and papped cousins. Oddly enough this what makes them a Mecca for a certain kind of surfer, one seeking solid but uncrowded gems. Degrees of perfection denote the famous from the ugly duckling in a glistening competition where even the runts would be winners almost anywhere else.

Went through the Telo's in '93 with a couple of mates on a fishing boat chartered from Telo. In 10 days we surfed 11 unchartered waves some good, some epic, didn't see another soul. That was before the days of charter yachts, which in my opinion have ruined the spirit of surf adventure and givin those who haven't earned it access to some of the best kept secrets and rewards of surf adventure.

I do know what you mean, you put the time in, learn Bahasa Indonesian get out to some remote outer island perfect waves in the middle of nowhere, and, hello there's half a dozen boats full of surfers....still, they have 11 days, i have months and they miss out on the rest of the experience, you go for the waves but at the end of the day, its so much more, hanging, eating and living with the locals, money cant buy that.
