{http://www.joeway.co.uk|Surfing! Not something you’d necessarily associate with Essex and the Thames Estuary, but on Sunday 19th September 2010, a group of 10 surfers entered the water at Thorney Bay, Canvey Island.
The reason was quite simple, to raise money for three charities, Havens, The Indee Rose Trust and the Precious Lives Appeal, under the title of the Joe Way Paddle for Life.
The original paddle was started by local RNLI lifeguards in Newquay, Cornwall in 2008, after the death of a local boy Joe Way from the largely unknown, Angelmans Syndrome and Steven Johnsons Syndrome.
This year saw the first sanctioned paddle outside of Newquay and with support from local extreme sports store, Wet & Dry Boardsports, it proved a huge success with the paddlers ages ranging from 8 to 78.
Event organiser Owen Clements, who has known the Way family for over 15 years, said, “this is a great way of the local watersports community in Essex to pull together and raise money for some fantastic charities, next year will be even bigger and better". So far fundrasing has brought in over £500.00.
