Troubled in his earlier heats by board choice Dane looked stiff initially. However suddenly he bonded with the wave and began to unleash his bag of tricks. Speaking later he admitted that the pressure of man-on-man elimination heats have in the past really got to him. He eventually lost a wave-starved semifinal to Hobgood, but not before impressively stamped his authority on today’s proceedings.


It was a bit of a bummer to have things die down like that after the quarterfinals, Dane said. I’m still happy to be here though. The waves were so much fun that it didn’t even really feel like a contest.
