JOB done over mentor and greatest Pipe rival. John John Florence whipped the Volcom Pipe Pro win from under Jamie O'Brien's nose.
That's two Volcom Pipe Pro comps on the bounce and a Triple Crown over Jamie and soon the only person not calling John the new king of Pipe will be John John himself. You have to assume JOB's already stopped giving him wedgies behind the Pipe house.
O'Brien shook his head and laughed, "Man, I feel like you just threw me out of the car before we got home. I'm going to come and steal that trophy from you in the middle of the night."
Yesterday was a day of who had the largest carry bags, whereas final's day was a smaller and by far trickier proposition. Four ways up in these conditions is never easy and strategy and luck got competitors in the right spot more often than not. You still gotta ride out of it though and it was no accident that JOB and John John were at it tooth-and-tit until the end. Who's better? It's a turn of the rail, a paddle-stroke between them, and then a gulf to the next crown pretender.
It all came down to the final few seconds. With one minute to go Florence paddled over and congratulated O'Brien. Then a dark line on the horizon caught his eye. One last wave stacked up on the Pipeline reef. Fifteen seconds to go... Florence clawed his way past a frantic O'Brien who could see the writing on the wall of the wave. Florence clawed his way past Jamie, over the ledge, under the lip and into the heat-winning tube ride - a 9.93 - to claim the $20,000 first prize.
Jamie O's future is now. John John winning again is no fluke of a precocious kid.
