JORDY Smith completed a clean sweep in winning the Billabong Pro South Africa, collecting his first event win and the world number one slot in front of his home crowd. Adam Melling (who was there on merit) didn't stand a chance as Jordy bagged favourite spot in the ASP World Championship race.Always touted a surfing prodigy Jordy is now fulfilling his competitive potential and has been the model of consistency this season -- hence gaining the world number one rating earlier in the contest without even winning an event.
A dominant Jordy tore his first wave to pieces, blew his fins out at every opportunity for an 8.9. Melling's reply was almost comparable but he fell at the last. The final was on. Wave number 2 for Jordy was a beauty with infinite precision exhibited over every turn, scary to watch. The crowd went bonkers, he acknowledged them and a plus 9 dropped in to combo Melling.
Commentator Ronnie Blakey aptly called it "disgusting level of control" which was pretty spot on.
