Stormrider Description
A sectioney and uncrowded righthander that holds big swells as well as gathering up the best of the smaller days along the Costa Estoril. It breaks off a jetty and is exposed to W winds, but is usually fairly quiet.
Residential sewage mixes with the generally poor Lisbon water.

Local Knowledge
If you find yourself in the Lisboa area from Sept. to April you are bound to find swell somewhere. If you are also car-less, fear not, you can get to most of the city breaks via the train or even bus. The train from Lisboa to Cascais runs every 20 minutes and you can bring your board on no worries. One of the biggest beaches as you move west from Lisboa is Carcavelos. It tends to be more crowded but the mood in the water is hardly agro. It is a great beach break with the whole mix from surf schools to surf pros. Next stop...Sao Pedro. It is tucked into a bay with a point on the western side. Tends to be mushy but the rides are very long. Pretty easy paddle out if you start on the inside to the west. Sao Joao, Estoril, and Monte Estoril are the next train stops and surf spots as you travel toward Cascais. Sao Joao breaks over a rocky reef and gives both lefts and rights. Estoril breaks only when the swell is big and westerly. Its a mix of sand and rocks near the jetty, short rides, but fun. Monte Estoril breaks best at a middle tide, watch the rocks in front of the jetty. Breaks on a smaller swell than Estroil due to how it faces the ocean. If its really big you can even find yourself surfing on the big beach just before Cascais in front of the scuba shop. This left is fun when it fires and again be conscious of the rocks as you come in. Surf with a smile, greet the locals in Portuguese, and enjoy yourself.

This graph shows the percentage of days that had a ridable wind swell (7 seconds period or more) or groundswell (10 seconds period or more) of over 3ft. It also shows the dominant wind direction. Not all of these days will neccessarily give great surf, and very short lived wind swells or longer period secondary swells may produce surf not recorded, but it gives a clear idea of the seasonal trend and a rough guide to the chances of scoring something ridable.
