Known locally for their bamboo tees and high performance skateboards, the boys at Little Green Rock have been working at creating a surfboard made from bamboo and carbon fibre for the past five months.
The board turned out beautifully, but the real beauty will come when they can field test it in the coming winter swells. Having made a few wooden prototypes first, they have found that, although a bit heavier on land, these hollow boards are a joy to ride once in the water.
To enable them to test in the most wide ranging local surf conditions, they decided to make the first bamboo board a 7 foot 4 mini-mal. The concept board has glass-on bamboo fins, but all further models will have a more standard fcs system. In December the Little Green Rocksters will also be making bamboo fins to fit both fcs and lockbox. The boards are expected to be available for custom order from February next year.
Little Green Rock weren't content to limit themselves to producing one-off customs, and have therefore teamed up with Ryan Herve and Nutz Surfboards to create a line of Biofoam surfboards. Shortboards, fishes and mini-mals will be available to surf shops immediately and they hope to have stock boards available for purchase online early next year.
They'll get some pictures and field test reports on the website soon, and if you want further information or are interested in becoming a stockist for Little Green Rock surfboards, skateboards or clothing, contact them at whatsup@littlegreenrock.com
