EDDIE went, oh it went, and congrats to Greg Long for the win. To say that pretty much everyone thought Kelly had it in the bag until the final minutes would be an understatement.
Especially after his second round surf when he added an 82 to his tally to bring him up to a whopping 313. Most photogs stopped shooting for the afternoon as the light's not so hot and what was the point?
KS had cremated everyone... Or so they thought.
Slater's almost barrel ... followed by his 98/100 drop
SPL Waterhousings is in the process of launching a new Port system for their housings. The new system promises to give water photographers more on the go options without having to take apart the entire port. For more details check out www.splwaterhousings.com
Waimea snapped around 35 boards in 3 days, pre and post Eddie, including my triple glassed rawson. and guns arent cheap these days. And Dorian got a two wave hold down. thats a long time underwater
The Eddie defines how great competitive surfing events can be. Waves of consequence, a one day format, surfers that have dedicated themselves to the type of waves that are on hand is a perfect example. The ASP should take notice. Competitive surfing, like it or not, is here to stay yet it needs to evolve...and currently, the WCT does not come close. Surfers, professional or recreational, deserve great events.
I have to say, think Kelly surfed well and so did Sunny and Long. At the end of the day surfing was the real winner remembering an amaizing waterman and an incredible event. Much respect to all people involved and especialy to Akau family. I thought the waves were insane and all competitors put it on the line!
long went srtaight on his 100 pt. ride and got annihilated. He got a 100 pt. ride on the drop alone. which was BS! KS should have gotten the trophy which would have been his 2nd. Which has never been done before.
Got to admit, i kept looking thru the scores trying to figure out where the 100 point ride was as i didnt see long's nailing as a 100 points. Kelly didn't get 100 for his commitment for the barrel! Either way though it was great to see it all happening live on the internet. One thing is for sure though, Greg Long surfed hard throughout his heat.
They"ve been robbing Kelly all year!!! He should've won!!! ( just look at what his board is doing...) He got so robbed at "SUPERTUBOS" also... They gave it to Owen "Wilson" for his weak lil' air rev.... Slater had a way better barrel and surfed way more critical and on rail... Maybe the critics("DONKEYS") wanted to see a show-down between Mick and Parko...but they all looked pretty LAME for pushin' that kid thru that heat... I think the ASP should invest in some eye-glasses for those judges!!!!
I was up till 2:30am watching this. Kelly had it made. Mr long was possible in last place after his first surf with a rubbish score but came out all guns blazing in his second surf. Amazing to watch.
Have you guys heard of Andrew Marr? from Capetown, in my opinion just as good as Baker. Marr gets the biggest sets on any given freesurf at Waimea (which by the way only breaks big about 12 times a year)
Andy Iron's wave in Heat 5 was epic! (similar to Bruce's in 04) Caught a 25/30ft monster out the back and rode it all the way in, getting barrelled off his nut in a huge 10/12ft close out shorey!! The guys an absolute legend!!
That was epic! it felt like i was watching something really special! so glad this event was online, so grateful for the t'internet! will have to try be on the beach next time.
Yeah, so good to watch it live! I thought the coverage was awesome, you really got the buzz of the place & Freddie P & the guys in the comm box were so psyched, especially when the big sets came in!!!
