[PT-Antarctica / Neko Harbor]

© 2009 - Meredith Fishman

Antarctica was amazing - the most beautiful and unusual place on our planet. A freak wave like this was such a gift. It is actually a little "tsunami". We spent a few hours at Neko Harbor when suddenly there was a massive gunshot-like noise followed by loud cracks which echoed around the bay as part of the glacier fell into the bay. Next thing we know, the water rises and causes a mini tsunami. I quickly captured the entire sequence of the glacier falling in different stages and the consequent waves.

#2 needs some perspective like a person because it sys its a mini tsunami, but it looks about 3 foot

I surf on Vancouver island B.C., and in the winter good swell is almost always accompanied by some freakish wind/snow/sleet storm. Hooded 6/5/4s, booties, and gloves are the only way to go!

Winter at The Wall, New Hampshire: my take is to try for days where the sum of the air temp and the water temp is at least 70F, or let's say 5C - but it sounds better in Farenheit - almost toasty.

Fantastic article - you are all mental & a lot of respect is due. I wonder where you all go when you go on your hols? :)

Surfed in hail , never snow. Lads you're gonna have get bigger Speedos to house those nuts.

More Great shots. Video realy well put together. Not sure I'd suffer the cold for that wave, but the guys were making the most of it. Reminded me of hiding under my Sponge on Constantine beach a few winters back, to keep the marble sized hail stones off.

Some great insights and stories. Looking forward to winter in the North Sea, tropical in comparison. Know how hard it is to grab the camera instead of your board when your local spots are fickle, but I'll try that bit harder this season having looked at this, cheers. Some fantastic images and the short film really gives you an idea of the temperatures, bloody baltic!

i'd nearly forgotten that feeling of paddling out on a january morning with a freezing cold north-easterly sorting out a proper south-westerly swell, and I actually cant wait, had enough of summer slop already
Sparko996 days ago +2 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
Agree - although I need the opposite swell/wind directions

Well Jason it's all yours this year, Im off to NZ, last winter was too damn cold, and there is a distinct lack of bikini clad women in January on the island. Keep up the good work with the pic's!
joel-braith994 days ago +4 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
agreed mate! it will be nice to have some quiet line ups again too. There's nothing like surfing below zero to sort the men out from the boys.
ZakJ971 days ago +2 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
