Martinique lies in the heart of the Caribbean Archipelago as one of the many islands making up the group of Lesser Antilles, or Breezy Islands. The land rises gradually from the coast towards the centre and northern parts of the island, where the peaks of the Carbet and the Mont Pelée dormant volcanoes can be found. The southern shores are highly regarded by tourists seeking picture perfect beaches, leaving surfers to focus on the northern and eastern coastline, ideally exposed to winter's North Atlantic swell.
