AN event of shocks, upsets, changing of the guard and controversial judging decisions. Forget the turning tide, it was more a stormforce shift in the wind as a rookie gale blew through the bleachers at the Quiksilver Pro France. Onshore is the new offshore and a 19.57 including a perfect 10 against Knox in the first semi, a shotgun to the face of linking power turns when the wind is running against you.

The final of the Quik Pro France, contested by a duo of newbies, Julian Wilson, on the tour from Snapper and Gabriel Medina from the September cut. Someone would win a tour stop for the first time. Medina Airlines the Brazza upstart against J-Dub the millionaire poster boy. Airlines probably couldn't have asked for more conducive conditions with the wind blowing across the lefts, and after Julian declined to force an interference Gaby stuck the knife in, twisted and pinned the event win to the door.

Last year France finished in do-or-die barrels, the year before, 2ft mush, and this year overhead cross-shore ramps. France is fickle and Mickey Picon probably has a few more grey hairs after trying to put this on/off event in the best conditions over the window, analysing each and every swell pulse hoping that the tide and sand will conspire correctly and a huge blanket of pea souper fog will not sweep in and deprive you of a carefully selected window.

Well deserved win Mr Medina. This influx of young guns on tour for me is nothing but good news. Its pushing some of the more established competitors to step out of their comfort zones (Damien Hobgood, not landing but boosting that HUGE front side air). The sport is evolving so quickly and competitors that don't evolve with it will fall behind. That's the nature of evolution.

to his credit he did beat the best full stop. on the judging, judging surfing is at best subjective at worst political someone is always going to be pissed off crying foul. get over it. i love the ppl who are claiming next world champ, so funny.... he is 17 guys don't put that pressure on him, he will put enough pressure on him self he dosen't need your help. he knows he won one contest in on shore 3 foot french muffins... with airs. there are real waves out there, their are guys like Mic F Parko ya ya ya he beat Parko I know, but there is snapper there is j bay there is bells waiting, o ya and pipe chops and I almost for got Owen Wright.... so all you brazzo and brazzo fans bang your chests enjoy the moment, but next world champ??? ps what happend to that what was his name Andre Desusa something like that I thought he was going to be the next world champ....

Mic J, Mr Kelly Slater said, after been runned over by gabriel medina twice (at the same day), that he (Gabriel) will win A BUNCH of world titles....can`t remmember last time he said that about any other surfer. so enough said pls grab yrself a popcorn and enjoy the MEDINA show or go cry to yr canguru mamma. by the way, joel cut back pakinson will never win a world title and juliano justin bieber wilson is 5 years older then gabriel which already surfs better then him......next generation of ozzys HAS NO PROGRESSIVE SURFERS....face that!!

brazilians surf dirty adriano does that guy medina does all ive seen from this brazilian influx to the ASP is a bunch of guys out there trying to make all the real pros jump on priority theyre just using that in a dirty way to put themselves in contention its undesirable, cheap and dirty to try to win your heats and comps by getting your competition DQ'd....if this is how the brazilians see theyre going to win their championships they should just stay in brazil cuz all that respect theyve been yearning will go out the window...too many brazzys gettin 10pt rides on one trick pony waves as well put it away for the proper wave judges cuz once you score you cant take it back and then you completely undermine the remainder of everyone elses waves

hey, here in brasil surf is not even popular....in AUS those kooks spent a lot of money, have all the structure and 99% of ASP but even so they can not do the job....better just watch brazzo show or just grab yr pink buggyboard and go date a canguru.

Wilson was robbed. While Medina schooled Slater and made the Brazilians proud. That 4 wave flurry Wilson caught mid final starting with the 7.00 was so under scored its a crime. He killed every one with total control, pulling a backside 360 air on the first 3 and a massive boost on his frontside and pulling it. all i can say is ppplllleeeeaaaassseee.

word 2 your mom, never a truer word typed. medina beat slater and knox fair and square regardless of a dubious 'perfect' 10 score for a 1 move wave? but wilson was totally underscored in the final and what about the interferance?

There was no denying medina in these conditions, he looks like the best aerialist on tour and the bar's been raised again!
