The south coast on the Fleurieu Peninsula picks up more swell and is offshore when N winds are blowing. For mal-riders/beginners/improvers, Middleton Point is the place. Even with 50 guys out, this right point, rated in the top 10 gutless waves by Tracks in 2002, has room for everyone. Often works better in onshores as it it crumbles and reforms time and agin on the long journey into the beach. Paddle out can be annoyingly gruelling when constant swell lines break all over the place.
It's useful to stay in Middleton where a handful of surf spots can be checked in 10 minutes. Good kite-surfing area here and down the long expanse of Middleton Beach, which now and then can turn on the barrels between mushy days.

This graph shows the percentage of days that had a ridable wind swell (7 seconds period or more) or groundswell (10 seconds period or more) of over 3ft. It also shows the dominant wind direction. Not all of these days will neccessarily give great surf, and very short lived wind swells or longer period secondary swells may produce surf not recorded, but it gives a clear idea of the seasonal trend and a rough guide to the chances of scoring something ridable.
