Sitting above the eastern edge of South Africa, slightly off the swell path but close enough to benefit from the procession of swells marching up and across the Indian Ocean. Dominant winds around Madagascar blow from the north-east and from the south-west over Madagascar where bays and reefs bend around to the offshore position. Sea temperatures rarely vary only changing between 24 and 25°C/75 to 77°F. Both these countries offer the possibility of excellent, relatively unexplored waves and the odd serious shark encounter. Mozambique is the slightly wilder of the two, but South African surfers have been making regular pilgrimages to the area since the 1970s. Hot, humid and with a distinct wet and dry season these countries are waiting for surfing to explode.
