Winner of the New York Surf Film Festival, Musica Surfica, shot on King Island in Southern Australia, follows Richard Tognetti a leading violinist and artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He's joined by Derek Hynd, influential surfer extraordinaire, Tom Carroll and world class grom Heath Joske. They attempt to surf all manner of fin-less boards in new (but most-likey old) ways.
I have to admit a healthy dose of scepitism when I saw this, I love surfing in all its forms, but this way-out-there, highly ecentric movie with a classical score: well that's just one step too far isn't it? As it turns out the reviewers rated it as a keeper.
All in all I was completely won over by Musica Surfica in the end. The classical music won’t appeal to all but it certainly adds effect, and the surfing and progression seen is truly great. You also feel a little cultured after watching the movie and the extras. Definitely worth a watch for anyone interested in surfboard design and the evolution of the sport Richard de Beaufort
.Sentiments echoed by our other reviewers who almost in unison found it to be surprisingly engrossing, the surfing more than the music, but it all flowed together well, leaving you wanting more.
At times this sometimes means this movie is more about the music and less about the surfing and it did make me urge the dialogue on to the next surfing section as this is what I was really wanting to watch, but this is a minor point and would be in your top ten surf movies if you are mad on innovation, classical music and retro surfing Chris Dyer
.So if violins and fin-free surfing is your thing, then you'll be in heaven. If like the rest of us you think it sounds just a little too eccentric and perhaps high-culture then you might just be pleasantly surprised.
