[PT-Patrick Cummins' Review]
Patrick Cummins
Born '66 Surfing since age 11 Shortboarder with the exception of those small, lazy summer days when the longboard comes out. Can be found surfing year round at Cracky (Crackington Haven) and other breaks in darkest North Cornwall. Travelled and surfed in Ireland, France, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Tobago, Sri Lanka, Philippines & Hong Kong.

A surf movie like no other. A unique documentary featuring two interlinked stories, one of surfing and one of music. The surfing is centred around being ‘fin-free’ and is championed by Derek Hynd with the musical aspect of the film coming from Richard Tognetti, the artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. The result is a fusion of surfing and music the like of which, to my knowledge, has never been seen before. The fin-fee surfing is performed on a variety craft from traditional alaias and olos through to modern, yet fin-less, boards relying solely on bottom contours.

A variety of surfers are included, young and old, and although the concept of fins free surfing proves difficult initially, they all succeed in the end. Derek Hynd clearly has the technique mastered, pulling 360 spins at will, even on some sizable waves at J-Bay. On the musical side, Tognetti’s violin playing is absolutely astounding as is the value of his violin dating from the 1700s… $10M! The resulting soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to the amazing surfing on view. A breath of fresh air and highly recommended.
