GARRETT McNamara makes the XXL again after being towed into a bomb off Nazare in Portugal by Andrew Cotton. It is being called 90ft, making it one of the biggest waves ever ridden.
"At the end of the ride when it landed on me it felt like a ton of bricks" said Garrett. "At that moment it brought it all into perspective and I was very thankful to have made it because one mistake here could be your last."
"There had been a couple of huge sets hitting the cliffs before this one swung in" said Cotty. "It's when the canyon's refraction combines with the running swell that you get the big ones, sort of a combination effect."
"We were without the main safety ski and no helicopter back up." Said Al Mennie, who was running water support. "All we had was a ski to tow and another ski which doesn’t work in white water, plus Nicole spotting for us on the cliff top. Instead of yesterday's five man team on the water, we were only three.
"We saw the set coming, a three wave cluster much bigger than all the other sets we'd seen that day. The first wave was big, the second bigger and the third a monster. It was that third wave which Garrett surfed and then immediately afterwards the ocean sank back as if it had spent itself."
“Both Cotty and I rode two big ones in the 60ft+ range and then when Garrett got on the rope, a wave, maybe 30ft bigger came out of the canyon, it was meant to be. I had the best seat in the house as he dropped down the face of the biggest wave I've ever seen. It was incredible."
im sure everyone here has surfed 8 foot and above! people should be able to comment what they think about a photo without been called "haters" think you need a smoke there dude, chill out! no need to get so serious about the issue!!!!
Have any of you nay sayer hater types even surfed 8 foot Sunset, I mean real 8 foot Sunset?
How about 8 foot Nusa Dua? 8 foot real 8 foot anything No ya haven't so, SHUT UP HAVE SOME RESPECT!!!
Out with ruler: surfer=5mm wave(from bottom of his board to lip)=80mm thats a 1/16 ratio. Lets say surfer is 6 foot .....6 foot x 16 = 96 foot. Given that hes not at the bottom of the wave. Id say its well over 90 foot. Amazing Fair play.
We're definitely not going to get close to measuring it based on these photos. Nevertheless, everytime I watch this I find my stomach wanting to drop out of my nethers just before he makes his turn. Respect.
Hey bud, all you haters are nerds. The fact that there was only one ski that day with no rescue ski means he put his life in his own hands. Get out there and do it yourself if its so easy then talk smack... NERDS!
This wave was 90ft+. Don't sit there on your little laptops and make an embarrassment of yourself attempting to judge and "measure" it?? Jas people no fok all these days. He's cutting his ride short at the lower third and ejecting because if he went to the bottom theres a good chance he wouldn't come out clean! Or rather..alive!
On first look the wave doesn't look 90 ft or anything near it. However, if you take a closer look it may be near this size. Check out how long it takes for the plunging lip to hit the clearwater. This gives an indication of how big it actually is. Also take into account that the surfer it about 20ft from the bottom of the wave when he hits his lowest point on the wave. Not a classic big wave but awesome all the same - Well done to ALL Involved.
dude i did the same and came up with the same size, not bitching or anything hats off the those guys, must have balls like a Bengal tiger! :) anyway thought miguel del toro is only fictional no????? :)
Huge, yes. Monster bollocks, yes. One of the biggest ever ridden? No. Miguel del Torro's 100 footer is visibly much bigger. Controversial? I dont think so, big wave hero's ride waves this size every winter. And before i get hated, no, i have never ridden a wave even 1/3 this size! Maybe its an American thing?
until I watched that YouTube clip of the news, I was definitely thinking this was Chile...and the map didn't help either, since I thought it was the Pacific coast haha
Just for the hell of it, I measured Gmac w/ my clear plastic ruler and then measured from the bottom of his forward foot to the top of the wave directly above him. I considered Gmac about 4 feet tall in his stance...50+ foot face...not including what's below him. Very big!
Such lunatics, I'd say the serotonin rush off that would be better than anything! You can watch the unedited version here as this one cuts to the board shot and misses a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=q6ubctGE3Vc#!
