WHEN Susan Chaplin arrived in the village of Nembrala on the Indonesian island of Rote, the 12th stop on her two-year surf sojourn, she hadn’t anticipated sharing waves with a former World Surfing Champion...
Matt Archbold, dropping it into fourth gear as he heads down the track and into the first corner
I spent the whole of June 1997 at this place.
It was eight foot one day, six foot one day, three foot on about 3 days, and totally flat for the entire rest of the stay.
The homestay experience was awesome though (at Mama's) and I made great friends from all over the place. Broken planes, dodgy ferries and the Madly coloured bemos around the little oasis in Kupang made it memorable forever.
Would I go again? Probably not. Being so far east it misses a fair whack of the action. Its a pretty safe spot and would be good for intermediates to get a taste of indo without leaving too much of themselves on the reef.
Mike i earn minimum wage,i work the summer here then spend winter in indo, every year, its cheap as bro no need for such negative stuff you dont know that guy.
Go get a job and stop being bitter mike!!! Then you might afford to get to Indonesia, lose that chip on your shoulder and experience these waves... Indo is unbelievably cheap to live and get around!!!
J STYLEZ WHO THE FUCK CAN AFFORD TO GOTO INDONESIA BESIDES SPOILED DOUCHEBAGS LIKE YOU. MSW POST ALL YOU WANT THATS WHAT THE INTERNET IS FOR. J STYLEZ IS A SURF NAZI.
Not to mention malaria. I talked to a nurse at the local hospital who told me that there are several serious cases of malaria every week. For a small island like this, that's a lot.
In any case, the wave is definitely not Gland-quality.
For a surfer to make his or her trek this far from home is quit a task...You can't just step off the plane and be there.... Multiple bimo rides thru maleria infested jungles, sketchy mini plane flights, or long boat rides that take you further and further from most peoples comfort points is what you really have to go trhu to get to a place like this....You think G-Land was ready for the world???? Was the world ready for G-Land??? Probably not!!!! But Gerry Lopez was ready for it!!!! The ocean is a wonderful thing....She can definately take care of herself..... As for the adventurer die-hards willing to make the long and not so easy journey to this paradise for surfers.... more power to ya!!!! Show much respect to all the people on the way-and I'm sure you will be rewarded ten-fold.....Come back with less material than you brought (the natives don't have much!)...and Indonesia is the land of KARMA.....don't ever forget that!!!!! We're only on this planet for a short time.....get out there and enjoy your life... For those worried about the place getting too crowded... get over it.... I come from one of the most crowded point breaks in the world!!!! And the Mother sends me set waves every time I paddle out!!!!! If you have no "flow" with her....I can see why you fear of the place becoming too packed!!!! But just remember "patients young grasshopper" -a wave will come to you!!!!!
why do people have to go somewhere nice and fairly unknown and the shout about it in international press ? just ruins it, this spot can't hold that many people and the locals aren't rady for it.
