At 29 years old, Plymouth’s Luke Young is one of Europe’s youngest professional surfboard shapers, with an invaluable 13 years of experience already under his belt. No stranger to the Plymouth surf scene, Luke Young Shapes is back - bigger, better, and in new premises.

Luke has spent the past three years working with various surfboard manufacturers in the South West, and has also been fortunate to hone his skills with a number of internationally renowned shapers. Pat Rawson from Oahu, Hawaii, and Rob Vaughan of Billabong surfboards, were both key to the development of Luke’s shaping. Besides cutting it with top shapers, Luke’s broadened his board building skills. As well as spraying with Nick Williams who’s responsible for some of the finest graphics ever seen on a surfboard, Luke’s been laminating with renowned craftsman Phil Northey.
Luke commented, “I think it’s essential to be able to complete every aspect of surfboard manufacture to an extremely high standard. This way I’m completely happy with every board that leaves my factory.”
Tired of commuting Luke decided it was about time he built his own factory closer to home. Located at Battisford Farm the new factory is on the outskirts of Plympton, Plymouth. Conveniently situated next to the A38 Devon Expressway, the factory is only minutes from the city centre, and strategically positioned to suit coast hopping surfers.
Every style of board can be made to order, from high performance shortboards, to twin fins, quads, or ten foot mals. On top of this, custom spray jobs, resin tints and ultra smooth gloss polishes ensure every board is unique. A range of examples can be seen at the factory show room, the Billabong Store Plymouth, Wild Waters Plympton, and select shops nationwide. All abilities are catered for from novices to seasoned pros, and the friendly, personal service ensures the perfect tailored board every time.
