NEW trick in surfing? Here's the Reubyo, effectively a forehand rodeo, a kinda backflip with 540 rotation. This is one of a kind.
Fresh back from Indo during which he escaped the coldest winter in 30 years, Brit surfer Reubyn Ash dropped us this clip. He's calling it the Reubyo and after half a bazillion attempts he finally rides out of it.
"Having thought about this trick for a year or so and already pulling rodeos on my backhand." Said Reubs "I started trying a couple during this year's Indo trip, but on my forehand. It's a pretty harsh trick to learn as you're getting pitched into the flats and you can't get away from your board.
"Shortly after landing this I injured a ligament in my foot ending my trip. Can't wait to get back surfing and nail a big clean one with some variations I've been working on. Stoked!"
Was it clean enough to claim it? How clean does it have to be?
As a gymnastics coach and a good judge of bio-mechanics he is doing a full side flip with a 3/4 twist. I bet I could coach him in a very short time and he would be landing it in that same session,.it is obvious what he doing wrong,......but then he is getting a lot of it right at the same time. It is easy to correct and how about going for a double
i have sufed in america for many years mostly so cal and its true that the talent there is insane and its also very true that 80% of the lineup believe because they surf besides chris ward they may somehow be of the same standard-----wrong there are a lot of kooks claiming shit turns and wank airs.well done to a brit surfer who has cold winters and a lot less fortune in his pockets to get him out of bed and inspired.claimed, landed full stop.
It's great that he landed a new air, and I'm sure he'll get it clean soon enough. Give the guy some credit! I bet none of you "but it wasn't clean enough" 'perfectionists' can even land a decent air with any kind of style at all, never mind something as crazy as this. He will get it clean and stylish in no time!
I wouldn't say he rode out of it in the end, he landed in the white water kinda lying down on his boards, and he had to take off again from the white water....still it's impressive!
Amazing move, it's definetly the first forehand rodeo i've seen, and i'll champion the Reubyo name... but have to say he came out of it lying down with a sneaky little take off in the white water...so you can't fully claim it as pulled, sure he nail one soon though...and i bet in a year or two he'll be pulling loads of them. Definately the UK's hottest freesurfer. Can he start winning some comps and beat Russels achievements though??? wait and see I guess.
Maybe, but Eppo was prone.
However, you could argue that he reinvented Mike McGill's 540 McTwist from 1984 (who in turn borrowed that from a Rollerskater)
Whatever it is, it's sick :-)
just got back from J-Bay where Brit surfers are getting a lot of good press thanks to clips like this and international exposure. Great move, legit claim!
Reubeyo rodeo schmoodeo schmodeo. Don't get me wrong, the talent is sky high but I can't tell the fU(&1N diff and I sure as hell can't be arsed to count the degrees of the various rotations. For me the best bit by far was that stand up barrel.
Totally agree. Airs like that are bloody impressive but they won't win him any comps. In fact I remember he tried to pull a Rodeo air when he got a wildcard to Mundaka a couple of years ago - pretty sure he lost the heat.
it was an alley oop and it was sick. Hes a free surfer, and im glad he's not goin for comps, or he might end up like poor Owen wright, having a sick air (on the end of a wave with some nice turns) beaten by a single floater.
nah the american is rite, its an unreal trick but not clean enough, if he nails the landing it'll be amazing and fair play to the brits if he aces it but rite now it doesnt count
