Nuts & Bolts : Interview with Resin8 team rider Joss Ash

So, let’s get started.

The Yanks have the Gudauskas brothers, the Dream Tour has the contention of the Hobgoods and the U.K have the Ash Brothers.
Q.)Give us a quick rundown of how you both ended up on the beach and being so competitive in the sport?

A.) when I was 1 year old we moved to the coast from about 10 miles inland. Peter my dad surfed so it was kind of inevitable that I would too. I pretty much surfed everyday. Reubyn got into it to which gave me a surfing buddy. Reubyn started entering contests and pretty much won everything. Now Reubyn is travelling doing contests and I’m doing photo trips. When Reubyn is home we surf all the time together and try and out do each other’s last manoeuvre.

Q.)You are known as one of the U.K most progressive riders that have brought big airs and new school moves to the U.K beaches, Do you feel that your equipment is improving your performance?

A.) Yes definitely. My boards are so much quicker, you can air much higher. Bodyglove wetsuits are really flexible and warm so I feel more comfortable and agile. All surf equipment is getting so good now; the general public have access to elite equipment.

Q.)We have got some epic footage of you on an R&D mission with your new board sponsor Resin8 in Indo, can talk us through the trip?

A.)We went to Bali in early Feb for a month trip. We stayed in Uluwatu at a place called Mamos. We just surfed Uls everyday and scored some really fun waves. I ate so much porridge and pancakes, which was perfect surf food. We flew to Sumbawa and spent 7 days at Lakeys. Pretty much pumped everyday. It was really nice to spend some time with dad and Reubs.

Q.)Last month’s Surfer magazine ran an article about the surfboard industry in the post Clark foam era, new technologies have found their way onto the market that have all been labelled something different depending on who you are talking to. With so much choice, as a surfer seeking performance what you would say to a mate in the pub when suggesting what to look for in a board?

A.)Depending on his or her ability. I would probably suggest get an epoxy because they last so long and make a lot of the fundamental parts of surfing easier. They are make paddling and catching waves easy, they are a lot quicker over the water producing more of there own speed allowing the surfer to concentrate on manoeuvre.

Q.)Not all of us have the cash to own a 10 board quiver, do you have 1 trusty old faithful?  Have you named her (if she is female that is) and what makes it such a good all rounder?

A.) Yes I have a good old faithful named “looks like s**t but goes amazing” Basic resin8 stock board 6ft 1 that is pretty old but just keeps getting better. I wish all boards would age like this one. Old dirty wax, lots of pressure dinged from airs and none landed airs. Just really nicely tucked rails hard edges at the back of the board, and good weight.

Q.)Like most sports, there are on and off seasons, give us a breakdown of how you plan your contests, training and travelling.

A.) I pretty much surf all year round. I like to get away in the winter for obvious reasons (cold, depressing, thick wetsuits, boots- gloves and hat) to train and keep my surfing progressing. All contests are pretty much in the summer so if I’m around I do them. Used to go to the gym but surfing is a more enjoyable way to train for me. Spring is my main time for training lots of un-crowded surf and good weather.

Q.) ITV, has started filming  a new soap opera with Jason Donovan ( the guy from Neigbours, and singing with Kylie Minogue) called surfers paradise. It’s being filmed in your part of the world and rumour has to that you are starring as the rebel heartthrob who steals the lead characters girl and sleeps with her under a stars  on the beach.
Can you tell us, was she good?

A.) This is the first I have heard. If so I will keep you informed.
