Ocean & Earth Australia 2007 Elite Junior Camp Gears Up8 May, 2007 : - - Sydney Australia -- Ocean & Earth Australia have long been supporting junior surfing in Australia and the world for over 25 years.
Starting with the original Pro Junior at Narrabeen which saw the likes of Tom Carroll, Kelly Slater, Barton Lynch and Mick Fanning all launch their professional careers from the Ocean & Earth/HB Pro Junior all those years back having also sponsored and guided the careers of Todd Prestage, Shane Wehner,Ant Macdonald and (Phil Macdonald) all of whom have competed on the world Championship tour “stated Phil Macdonald”.
With an ever expanding junior team, it was time to pick the elite team riders, put them into a two day camp, have a bit of fun, but also give them some tips on their surfing, fitness and basically show them what it takes to be a professional surfer.
The camp was on the south coast of NSW Australia. Attending the camp was Shawn Mawson 13 from Manyana, Byron Barlett 18 from Manyana, Matt Poul 15 from North Curl Curl, Jackson O’Donnell 12 from Cresent Head and Sam Lambert 16 from Cathrine Hill Bay. Also in current 4th position on the World Qualifying Series, Drew Courtney was there to assist coach Matt Tucker in training the groms.
Team manager for Ocean & Earth Guy Bartlett was keeping a close eye on everyone and Phil Macdonald was also able to attend due to bells finishing early “stated Paul Munten Ocean & Earths - Chief operating Officer”. The waves were pumping for the first day of the camp with up to 6 feet plus waves.
All the juniors paddled straight out with some of the waves five times over their heads. All the juniors really impressed with theirs skills and their aggressiveness in such solid waves. Matt Tucker was on hand to give the juniors some advice on technique, fitness and some mock drills such as heat simulation.
Phil Macdonald was there to explain the road to being a professional surfer and some of his experiences. Phil explained the need to set goals, work hard at achieving them including the importance of self belief and confidence within yourself.
Phil also explained to them the rewards of achieving there goals, while still enjoying themselves. Phil was able to watch them surf and give them some pointers for surfing for pre, during and post heats. “Phil stated” it’s really amazing to be able to stand in front of these juniors with my experience and point them in the right direction.
Fifteen years ago I was right where they are now going through the same path to become a professional surfer, so it’s going to be really exciting to watch these juniors turn into world title contenders. Brian Cregan was on hand to cook the BBQ for the juniors as well as watching the skill level of these future champions.
It is amazing to see how well the O&E junior’s team surfed and I am really looking forward to watching these groms grow with Ocean & Earth, ”Stated Brian Cregan Global founder, Chairmen and CEO of Ocean & Earth”.
“One of Ocean & Earth junior elite surfers Matt Poul from North Curl Curl summed it up best stated Phil Macdonald“. “The two day camp was a great success, with some amazing surfing going down and all us juniors learning some new surfing and fitness techniques as well as learning what it takes to be a professional surfer”.
