[PT-Pat Cummins's Review]
Patrick Cummins
Born '66 Surfing since age 11 Shortboarder with the exception of those small, lazy summer days when the longboard comes out. Can be found surfing year round at Cracky (Crackington Haven) and other breaks in darkest North Cornwall. Travelled and surfed in Ireland, France, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Tobago, Sri Lanka, Philippines & Hong Kong.

From the opening animated sequence the tone is set and it is apparent that this is going to be a smooth production with a cool soundtrack.

The film focuses on the incredible determination and dedication required to be a successful pro surfer and in doing so, spans generations. From Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholemew through to John-John Florence, we see how surfing has evolved over the years and performance levels have reached new heights through each generation. This advance in performance levels is documented beautifully with footage spanning many years and is explained succinctly by John-John.

Interviews with Rabbit, Tom Curren, Sunny Garcia, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino and John-John Florence (amongst others) give a real insight into the mind of a pro surfer. The focus required to succeed at the highest level comes across strongly as does the mutual respect for one another, young and old. “A one track mind is good at the right time” states Kelly.
In an interesting section on board design and fin preferences, Dane Reynolds highlights the fact that everyone except Kelly prefers glass on fins. ‘Weird’ he says, that the then 8 time World Champion uses different fins to everyone else. Interesting I thought!

The overwhelming opinion is that Kelly is the best there has ever been but the man himself is keen to point out that the some of the groms are better than he was at their age. He also points out that, having achieved so much so young, it maybe difficult for them to maintain and sustain their drive and focus through the years. Words of wisdom indeed from the man most qualified to speak on the subject.

A refreshingly thought provoking surf movie with some excellent ‘extras’ including a great section from the groms on tour in Indo. Definitely one that will have you reaching for the ‘play’ button again as soon as it’s finished.
