Cleaning up Porthtowan© 2009 - Ruth Carruthers

SURFERS Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners are calling for volunteers to help continue the successful streak in SAS's marine litter campaign this year. SAS need as many hands as possible to help out at their annual beach clean at Porthtowan this Saturday the 19th of September from 10:30am to 2:30pm, as part of the annual Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beach Watch survey.

The campaigning will continue with a 'green' post box on the beach, as part of the Return To Offender campaign. This campaign posts identifiable marine litter back to the manufacture with helpful guidance on how to stop their products becoming beach litter. What’s more, we’ll be introducing our new Mulder and Skully style UFO (Unidentified Floating Object) competition, with the chance to win a prize for the best UFO recovered on the day!

SAS will provide gloves, bags and dispose of the litter as well as providing refreshments for all volunteers, plus during the beach clean there will be the opportunity to win fantastic prizes from Finisterre. All the volunteers need to do is dress for the day's weather, which will hopefully be, glorious sunshine! Under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

There is more litter than we can take in 1 day, but we've already seen this year, many hands can make a real difference! We need as many volunteers as possible to make this day successful and fun!

Ruth Carruthers, SAS Campaign Officer says: "The beach clean is a great event that everyone can get involved with and do something positive for Porthtowan beach. It's a fun event with a serious message that affects all beach users. Everyone is welcome to join us at Porthtowan, we have all the gear, refreshments and even a few prizes to give out. With your help Porthtowan will be a nicer beach.”
