REQUIRING one perfect swell the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang hits amber alert today. To be clear this swell is significant but possibly not quite enough to run the comp in perfect pumping Padang.
Like the Eddie at Waimea this comp only goes if the conditions are perfect, meaning heaving pits spinning down the line.
"We're looking at the first significant storm of the waiting period, at 9.5ft@16 seconds and around 212 degrees and arriving overnight on Friday, peaking by dawn on Saturday." Said head forecaster, Ben.
"Padang Padang is very sensitive to direction and ideally we'd either want a more westerly storm or a larger swell for perfect conditions and this looks borderline on both counts.
"However given the perfect tides and the outlook for the next couple of weeks it's not been hard to convince some of the worlds best surfers to fly in and put the competition on standby. If it does come in a little better than called we've got perfect tides to run, if not we can promise there will be banging waves up and down the coast to get stuck into."
Flights booked for the end of August. 50quid round trip with airasia. I love living 3hrs away from Bali. One of my better life decisions. Un-like that fat bird i took home last night!
Patience, dear boy. Good swell but not spot on (yet), plus the europeans aren't as bullish with the low development as the americans. There's better to come.
There's a real Padang swell behind the one you're focusing on. Pretty good agreement on this from the EC ensembles so watch this space. Interesting to see how this storm develops.
