[PT-Greg Long and Grant Baker take top honours]

PADDLE power came back into the ascendancy as the gladiators of big wave surfing took centre stage for the ninth annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. Regarded as the Oscars of big wave surfing, the XXL awards recognize the biggest and ugliest waves ridden over the past 12 months, as judged by a global panel of 250 surf industry former pros and big wave specialists.

Californian big wave surfer Greg Long, 26, took top honors at the gala ceremony and was handed $50,000 for winning the Ride Of The Year Category. South African big wave pioneer Grant Baker, 35, (pictured left) was awarded two honours: taking out both the XXL Biggest Wave Award and the Surfline Men’s Best Overall Performance. More than 2000 people packed the Grove Theatre in Anaheim to witness mind-blowing rides from Chile, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, California and French Polynesia.

Yes, ross did survive, I actually read the article in Tracks (my aunt from aus brought it for me.) and he ended up getting 2 more waves afterwords. (That is if it isn't the one in shipsterns that looked much, much worse.) This was the maiden session at Pedra Branca too.

Holy fucking shit, that Yeti place fooled me into thinking it is teahupoo at it's heaviest and biggest!!! This place might just be heavier than teahupoo, if the appropriate swell comes.

This puts tow surfing at shame, I've seen people tow half that size.

As for Greg Long's ride ... sheesh, that swell at size is usually moving way too fast to paddle in by the time it hits the rock at Dungeons. These guys own Africa.

Go Twigs ... Obviously gnarly, the thickness of the wave cannot be seen here. The south-Atlantic swell moves directly over Tafelberg Reef *on its way to Dungeons*, a couple of kilometers closer in. It's a ride to suspend belief.
